new tyres - ulp!

Hi Gang,

my tyres are almost down to the wear bars. I have Goodyear Eagle NCT5 175/60R15 all round. No problems at all, apart from a very slow leak in one that only started recently.

I just popped round to tyre shop next to my workplace for a quote. When I got them they were £48 apiece. The same tyres now are £80 each. Ouch!

I asked if they had anything else, and they told me this was the only tyre in that size that they did. At that price it's almost worthwhile changing wheels.

Any thoughts on what I should do?

Thanks,

Dev

try a 185 section, not much bigger but a whole lot cheaper, try mytyres.co.uk khumo's are £35.20 each they can deliver to your local fitter and you can find who will fit locally through their site. I know a few of the A2 guys have these on at the moment

Thanks for the replies guys. I took a look at the sites you recommended. There are quite a few 185/60R15. Taking things a bit further, there's even more choice with 185/65R15. How much can you tinker around with the sizes before things go pear-shaped?

I've fitted 185/65-15 and everything is fine. No rubbing and you will get a more comfortable ride.

You need to look at the effect on your speedo as that will be the limiting factor, you don't want it under reading with all these scameras around, I went from 205/40/17 to 205/50/16 with Eggbert and according to my gps scamera beater the speedo was the reading correctly, also had 205/45/17's at the end of my ownership with the same speedo readings I think the Audi's speedos seem to read 3-5% fast
A 195/55/15 gives a 0.8 slower reading ie at 60mph you'd be doing 60.5 assuming speedo is spot on.
With a 205/55/15 you'd be doing 61.6 which IMHO is acceptable, the 205 tyre should be okay as that's the size the sport model runs.
Please see this site for further tyre size comparisons
