New Tyres...

A 205/45R16 tyre won't fit a 6" rim. It needs a rim between 6.5" and 7.5". Any competent tyre fitter can confirm this by looking in his technical handbook.

However, a 195/50R16 tyre will fit a rim between 5.5" and 7.0". The rolling radius is less than 1% more than the 205/40R17 tyre.

Audi do seem to fit unusual and expensive size tyres to their A2 range.

...but would you gain anything from having a 195 tyre? The 185's have plenty of grip... and would you lose anything from having a 195 tyre? For instance less comfort, more road noise, more drag...

185 Continentals are available for £83, whereas 195 Goodyears are available for £56.

No difference in ride comfort if you reduce the tyre pressure by 5%.

The 195 tyre will last longer and help protect the rims from kerbing damage as they protrude slightly more.

Slightly more drag, but not as much as 205s. [27]

Once the tyre repair 'gunge' is used you should not repair the tyre, i know it's more expense but tyres are an important issue. I would never have a tyre repaired as you don't know what stresses the tyre wall has taken whilst the tyre has been deflated.

You may also be aware on the continent the legal limit is 3mm and not the poultry 1.6mm. Try checking out any tyre manufactures web site showing the lack of grip in wet conditions on a worn tyre.
