New (well to me...) A2

That’s very nice - much newer than ours ours! Almost a case of one of the first, and one of the last :) Is that the same silvery beige that A4s of the period came in? Ours looks great....from more than 3 feet away. Up close the paint is a bit scuffed and marked, but the silver hides it well! Blue hood, blue cloth interior. It’s nice to drive, in a lazy kind of way, though it’s quite happy cruising at high speeds. Only 150bhp though, which is the same as the 1.4 petrol engine in our A3 e-tron. That’s progress I guess

Cheers, i'm liking your A2 just as much that colour is awesome! Ours was a special order paint colour called Melange, the only one in the country and was a Audi Uk car for the first 18 months. Yes i have seen only a handful of the early A4s in this colour but again it's rare. Your BM might have the same power as your 2.6 but i bet it's no way near as turbine smooth as these Audi V6 are. That's what i like about them, turbine smooth and perfect for relaxed wafting about in during summer and quick when you ask it to be. My old 80 avant was silver and your right that colour hides a few sins very easily so it's buyer beware on silver cars.;)

The Audi V6 is very very smooth, that’s true, and the auto box slurs it’s changes beautifully :)

Flicking through the A2s service book and history over a coffee this morning I couldn’t help but dig out the one for the Cabriolet. In 2007 they were serviced just a week apart at Wimbledon Audi - what are the oddds of that!

A meant to be purchase Peter. A coincidence or fate that they end up in your keep.

Don’t say that...I’ll never be able to get rid of either of them!!

Though it does throw up, for me at least an interesting observation. Over the last 5 years I’ve bought 4 relatively cheap Audi’s either on the spur of the moment (the Cabriolet and the current A2) or to scratch an itch (the A8 because I’d never owned a V8 and the first A2 because I’d always wanted one, but got talked into buying a MINI Cooper by my partner in 2001 instead). To be fair, that car wasn’t for me...

Each cost under £800, and in fact the Cabriolet was the cheapest. Despite that they all have (had) either very or pretty comprehensive service historys, staying in the main dealer network far longer than I’d expect. The Cabriolet dropped out in 2010, so after 16 years. The A8, which was a 1996 car, in 2011 so after 15 years, this A2 in 2012 (12 years) and the previous A2 (which was an 02 car) also in 2012. So either I’m exceptionally good at choosing used Audis (definitely not the case), exceptionally lucky (possibly...) or Audi owners stick with the dealer network far longer than I’d expect?

Possibly true that some owners entrust their cars to the Audi dealer network longer I guess Peter. Shrewd purchases also come into play too.

My mother in law still takes her 10 year old Audi to the main supplying dealer. She is looking at a new one and is going to the same dealer as she thinks going anywhere else would not give the warranty !? Average Jo probably thinks they have to be serviced at the dealers.

Exactly, what are the odds? I'd take that as an omen that the Cabriolet wants to stay in your good hands. It's saying "please don't send me the scrapyard in the sky"

On an X plate, yours will be one of the earliest cars, which were prior to the SE and Sport models. Arm rests were never options for any A2, so yours will have been aftermarket. Alcantara was an option for the A2, but I've never seen a dark grey/black alcantara - just a light grey version. Seat swapping is dead easy, but door cards, dash and carpets will all add to the workload and cost, so just enjoy your Twist interior.

I do wish I hadn’t looked on eBay...

Quite expensive Peter, but would look great offset against the Jaipur coachwork. If you factor in a minor refurb, you will end up paying a grand or more though. Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate, if you are tempted.

I have bought from the seller previously and can recommend; no affiliation.

Those seats have been on sale for at least 4 months. They were also advertising two sets of Red leather seats (equally expensive). I had to buy BOTH sets from him so that I could have the correct combination of front and rear seats.
He is an OK guy to buy from but not cheap and he is prepared to wait rather than reduce the price much.

The black leather / dark grey Alcantara ones are not as rare as you would imagine.

I had a set advertised for £200 and they took weeks to sell (they were a 5 seat version with the rear bench seat too).

I bought another set for £150 (delivered) (not bad, some wear on the Alcantara, which is very common)

So it is worth shopping around.

They do look nice, but I don’t plan on spending that much...!! I was once quoted £1,100 to re-trim the seats in a Mercedes C class from cloth/leather to full leather, and while that is even more expensive I think it might be better value, if that make sense? It’s way down my list to things to do at the moment though... famous last words!

I can recommend a maxiscan vag 405 handheld scanner. Its nowhere near as good as vcds but for about £20 it will pick up things like wheel speed sensors etc. Saves having to pay for a diagnostic.

I don't have access to a laptop at home so the maxiscan is a half decent alternative.

The scanner arrived in the week, so I’m going to give it a go at the weekend... Silly question I know, but where is the OBD port on the A2 please?

Drivers side under dash nearly to the pedals follow a line from the fuse panel downwards. Towards the right.

Well, a little update on this!

Back from the garage now after 2 weeks (to be fair, I had left it with them as I was in no pressing need of it). It’s working, there are no warning lights, the ABS and traction control work and the engine management light is off. They also found a few other things needing attention...

Parts replaced:
Oxygen sensor
Steering angle sensor
EGR valve
Coil spring
Top mount

Total cost of parts £454 (gulp...)
Labour to fit all of that, and do the tracking and diagnostic stufff £270
Add the VAT and the not inconsiderable total was £869...

Which was more than I paid for the car ?

So imagine how I felt when there was loud chime and another warning light as I drove away from the garage...

Fortunately that was the low fuel warning light, so £40 of Shell V Power (not not needed I’m sure, but quadruple points offer plus a bonus 70 points makes 95 Avios from the fill up ?)

All is now well :)

Next job is to fix the scuffs, refurb the wheel, fit new tyres and have the interior valeted
I reckon total cost after all that, and including the car, will be under £2,500 and I’ll have a fully sorted (for the time being...) A2 ?

Reading through that i thought great he's got it all fixed until the ballon burst when you said until i got in it and there was a "loud chime and another warning light as i drove away." You got me there you b****r! :p Great it's all fixed now. :)

Mmmm. 200 miles later and the engine management light is back on :(
Feels fine to drive, but somethings obviously not right
It’s got a new lambda sensor; any other common causes of this issue?
Thanks :)
