New (well to me...) A2

What you need is a colour diss from Tom. you'll be able to read and clear faults. It could be some random thing like poor fuel in the tank. Long story but i and a mate went to Birmingham to drop a car of for paint and he inadvertently put cheap unleaded in the A2 up there. Soon after the engine light came on, this time when i was driving it backbit still in Birmingham i just cleared it and it's not been back since.Thats 2 weeks ago and at least 400 miles. I put it down to poor fuel it's Just a thought.

I don’t think it’s the fuel; I filled it with v power at my local Shell station, and I use them all the time. In fact I also filled my BMW there the same day. Did I read somewhere on here that an imperfect seal on the oiled filler cap causes problems? Or am I imagining it...it’s more than possible!

You did read that, it was Steve Birchalls 1.6 FSI show car he's now selling.

Well, a little update on this!

Back from the garage now after 2 weeks (to be fair, I had left it with them as I was in no pressing need of it). It’s working, there are no warning lights, the ABS and traction control work and the engine management light is off. They also found a few other things needing attention...

Parts replaced:
Oxygen sensor
Steering angle sensor
EGR valve
Coil spring
Top mount

Total cost of parts £454 (gulp...)
Labour to fit all of that, and do the tracking and diagnostic stufff £270
Add the VAT and the not inconsiderable total was £869...

Which was more than I paid for the car ?

So imagine how I felt when there was loud chime and another warning light as I drove away from the garage...

Fortunately that was the low fuel warning light, so £40 of Shell V Power (not not needed I’m sure, but quadruple points offer plus a bonus 70 points makes 95 Avios from the fill up ?)

All is now well :)

Next job is to fix the scuffs, refurb the wheel, fit new tyres and have the interior valeted
I reckon total cost after all that, and including the car, will be under £2,500 and I’ll have a fully sorted (for the time being...) A2 ?

I have had my TT Comp refurbished last year and it cost me more than that.
Hope this is helping to keep the cost down.

Thanks! I’ve sent them a message to see if they have any in stock. But that does seem like a good price!

Mmmm. 200 miles later and the engine management light is back on :(
Feels fine to drive, but somethings obviously not right
It’s got a new lambda sensor; any other common causes of this issue?
Thanks :)

Was the lambda sensor a genuine Audi or an NGK / NTK part? I used a pattern part previously and it packed up after 50 miles.
An NTK one cured the problem once and for all.

Thanks. It’s a genuine Audi item I think (I hope so given the price!) but will double check Monday

Well, after £60 of interior and exterior valeting I think it’s come up pretty well inside and out!
I still need to sort the scuffs, but I’ve had a quote for that - just need to book it in. Comes in at £280. Refurbed wheel about the same, and I’m guessing tyres the same too? So another £800ish.

That’ll take the total to just under £2.5k. A lot, but I like it so that’s all that matters... ;)

A stunning job Peter - I love Jaipur Red and your interior contrasting trim. The interior has come up fantastic - it looks impeccable and defies its age in appearance and of course style.

Is that a couple of repairs to the rear OS seat? If so, it might be worth looking out for a rear set as you are a dab hand with the cleaning products. A mobile trimmer may be able to tidy up yours too. I had my leather repaired by a mobile trimmer and I was impressed by the finished product.

Great to see one of the earliest cars in one of the most unique colours popping out of the page and looking so fresh and dare I say, modern/new.

Yes, the rear drivers side seat has a couple of stitched repairs to it. Looks worse than it is, but I am looking out for a replacement :)

I think has a shape it does look remarkably modern; the fact that the BMW i3 has a similarish outline helps, but the detailing still looks relatively modern too I think

I'll also keep an eye out for you. It looks like platinum grey and from memory the early trim was called matrix (as per the film).

It looks beautiful Peter, Jaipur red and that twist interior looks stunning with factory front mats and rear electric windows. Superb! Shame about the rear seat, this is the problem with these old cars now perfection is a hard to mistress to follow but well worth it in the end. I'll also keep me eye out for you on that rear seat. As for the BMW the A2 wins hands down in the superior design stakes. Don't forget this car was penned in the mid 90's getting on for nearly 25 years ago. BMW??? Phaw! You need to look at my latest acquisition in all it's Twist finery! ;)

By the way, just to be clear, I’m not responsible for the quality of the interior valet. There’s a guy that cleans cars who comes to our office. I’ve used him loads of times on the A3 and BMW; £20 for inside and out, including windows and polish. The A2 is the result of a £60 full valet. It took him the best part of 5 hours, and in fact he was only going to charge me £40! I fully expected him to charge me more because of the state of it, not less. So I gave him £60 anyway. He’s done a great job :)

Mmm... I estimated £280 for a set of tyres. 4 185/50/16 Continental PremiumContact tyres were actually £390!!
Limited choice of tyres in this size though; it was either these or no name budget tyres for fitting on Saturday. Kumhos would have been on budget, but not available until next Wednesday, and in current conditions the state of the front tyres needs sorting ASAP!

@PeterS - Try looking for 195/45 R16 tyres instead. They are an official size for the SE alloys so not a problem from an insurance perspective and there's a much greater choice in that size. National tyres have a good selection of brands. It looks like about £75 per corner will get you good quality rubber. If you buy three or more, National will come to you to fit and balance the tyres, free of charge.

Thanks for that @TFG. Odd; Continentals are £20 a tyre less in that size!! Unfortunately I’d already order the 185/50s :(
Still, I will convince myself that the higher profile will lead to a slightly improved ride ;)
(I know that in reality the sidewall is probably the same height...but the 45 profiles are XL which presumably are slightly stiffer?)

Well, I have to say new tyres have transformed the car. It’s much quieter, smoother, and probably because they were all balanced, the slight jiggling and vibration at speeds of over 60 (!!) has disappeared. The slight pull to the left has gone too. I knew that new tyres would improve it; I didn’t realise how bad the mish mash of no name tyres actually were. I highly recommend the Continentals!! Chosen (a) because they were one of the few ‘proper’ tyres available, (b) our A3 has Continentals so I guessed they might have been OEM fit when new and (c) they were available for fitting today.

Hi, for info, my 2001 car has the same interior and the seat fabric was an option called 'satellite'
Early cars were a mid-grey colour called 'Swing' while later models went to a lighter grey called Platinum

Cheers Spike
