New (well to me...) A2

A further update on this, following a successful trip to see Steve B and get another key coded. Thanks for your help in also resetting the EML as well Steve :)

The car handled the 100 mile or so round trip faultlessly, as you’d imagine. Well, almost faultlessly. There was a ‘door open’ warning when I set off, indicating drivers door was open. It wasn’t. I thought there be an earth or wiring problem somewhere and resolved to fix it later. It was only when arriving at Steve’s that I noticed that the rear passenger side door wasn’t fully closed... problem solved! Though, surely it should indicate the correct door...?

Anyway, I now have an A2 that’s mechanically sound, has two keys, new tyres, a refurbished front bumper and wing and 4 refurbished wheels. Had it cleaned this morning, and if I do say so myself I think it looks pretty good :)

And yes, that’s another one next to me in the car park. A grey 05 plate TDi !

Brilliant looking A2 Peter, very well done, you have really improved this great little car. What a fabulous colour Jaipur red is.

Superb example of an early A2 and looking very fresh for it's 18 years of service.

The door open reminder only shows the correct door with the full version of the driver info system, your version will just show a door open, not the actual one.

Ah that makes sense then...if I’d realised that I’d have checked all of the doors earlier!

I’ve now got it to pretty much where I wanted; a well sorted, cosmetically tidy but standard A2. The sensible thing to do is obviously to stop, enjoy it and keep it well maintained...

But...

I can’t help wonder whether a refresh of the suspension after 113k miles wouldn’t improve things still further... Any ideas on (a) what’s a sensible regime of refresh and (b) roughly what I’m looking at cost-wise to have done...

Suspension recommendations are a mine-field. If you want to keep it original, then go for Bilsteins as they are the OE damper. Springs - get them from TPS. If you want uprated parts, either Bilsteins again or Koni or coil-overs. I think you'd benefit hugely if the dampers are original.

Thanks for that...pretty sure I’d want to keep it original. I guess what I’m wondering is what else, other than springs/dampers should be refreshed at the same time, I don’t know enough to know what, but I do know enough to know that there are other bushes etc that might have worn, if that makes sense? If I’m going to do it, I might as well do it properly!

The cost can add up quite quickly if you buy it all from Audi. I used aftermarket but good quality parts when I rebuilt the suspension on my last project car. Febi Bilstein for all the rubbers and top mounts, meyle for the drop links. Only used Audi for the nuts/bolts and didn't replace every one with new.

Even then it was around £500 In parts alone.
