Chat New Year New Adventure

Hello A2OC Members,
I have jumped into A2 ownership after down-sizing from a MPV and the family are acclimatising to our new purchase - a 2003 SE Tdi 75.

After considering the more contemporary Fiat 500, Fiesta and VW Up!, to be our family 2nd car, the A2 feels like a real back to the future vehicle offering so much more from the distant past.

First impressions have been very encouraging; everyone appears to like it's looks and versatile design even though they were dubious about buying a 20yr old car!

I'm relying on you guys to reassure me this adventure will be worth it and help me keep this little motor purring happily on the road.

So far the main concern from both my teenagers is where do they connect their phone to charge and stream their music to the (concert) stereo?:) In time they'll both be using these wheels to learn to drive in.

I'd be interested to know how other owners have upgraded their technology to provide some connectivity .

Looking forward to journeying with this community.

Raymie

Welcome and hope the TDI treats you well.

As someone who has an UP and an A2 in the family fleet I prefer the A2 for driving longer distances as there’s quite a lot more space however for being around town the stop start and quiet engine of the UP! makes slower speed stuff a lot more pleasant but the better stereo and seats tend to have me reaching for the A2s keys.

I have a Bluetooth adapter made by any car which emulates a CD changer in the standard concert headunits and means you can use the controls on the head unit for skip etc

There are a number of readily available mp3 aux adapters available for the standard Audi stereo. They connect into the cd changer port in the rear of the stereo. Here is a picture of my one..

It provides hands free phone calls, has a 3.5mm aux in, a micro sd card slot and a USB slot. Above it is foam to hold it in and below it is the instructions.

As for extra power I have added a hidden 3x12v and 3x USB socket power adapter behind the steering wheel. I use it to power my dash cam, Talex speed detector, phone charging and built in Garmin sat nav, so 2x 12v sockets and 2x USB sockets are used. All turn off with the ignition.

You won't regret the purchase the cars are quick to form an emotion bond! I get mine to myself and only my six year old likes it. One thing is for sure don't be in a rush to fit aftermarket head unit it's not as straight forward as it seems, I think the adaptor is way forward. Google anything and put a2oc at end to search forum too. Good luck

Thanks for the advice. The little A2 is definitely growing on me as I adjust to its drving style eg not rushing the 2-3 shift. ?

There is a fault on the radio fm reception at the moment so we’ve resorted to listening to my old cd collection! An adaptor with DAB and Bluetooth might be an ideal containment until I can fix the fm reception.

May just be the boot mounted aerial equipment. There's amplifiers and grounds to check out .. have a read about it on here somewhere, was one case recently with bad fm.

Welcome,

What radio do you have?, post a picture if not sure.

Another thread on poor radio reception to read.

Lots of others, just Google 'a2oc diversity'.

Thanks Andy, it’s the regular concert radio. I wiggled the connector wires on the diversity amp yesterday to no avail so will look further next weekend….

It was dry.

Did notice The service history for the car mentioned a leak being repaired in the boot so it might have had a dip in the past !

Certainly worth removing the diversity unit and checking the inside for corrosion.
I had a quick poke around and released the tabs on the right but couldn’t free it from the battery box after undoing the connections.

Yes that is the tell tale of water. Suggest you obtain a replacement diversity unit from one of our breakers.

Before scrapping it, get a painter's (as in artist) stiff brush, and cut the bristles down, so they're about 10 mm long.
Using pure water (Evian for example) wash the furry area gently, but firmly, to remove the fur, not the track or components.
When it looks clean, dry it in warm oven, to dry it slowly, not cook it.
When it's dry, look at the dodgy area with a magnifying glass, or better a jeweller's loupe, to see if any tracks are broken. From the pic, I'd say there's a good chance it'll be OK.
If it is, it'll need spraying with pc lacquer.
Good luck.
Mac.
