i think you could set your sights a bit higher than on 01, iv recently had an a2 (which is brilliant) i managed to get an 04 tdi 90bhp sport with climate control, cruise control and 17"s of ebay for £8900 which i think was quite good, but im sure if look hard enought and wait for the right one then you should get an 52/03 for that sort of money.

I've just done 104,000 miles in mine, reliability has been very good:
If there is a slight clunking over bumpy ground the roll bar bushes need replacing, depending on the age of vehicle (mines 02) the bar & bushes need to be changed, the parts are £60, anyone who fixes golf's/polo's can do it.
My front windows are a bit dickie, occasionally they wind themselves back down, when I wind then up, but not all the time....
If the light in the glove box doesn't work, the whole glovebox needs replacing... (crazy but true)
wheels buckle easy apparently... don't think this has happened to me..
make sure you check to oil!
other than that they are a really good buy.
I've just had my tax form through, and a years' tax on the 1.4tdi se, is £50 per year!
get one bought, and get skipton to add cruise control...

The best way to start is to test as many examples as possible to give you a feel for what drives well and what don't. Petrol and Diesel are very different in character so work out your preference first then enjoy the hunt.
