Newbie needs help

Hi All,

I'm looking to join the A2 Fold but would like some advice. I have my eye on a high mileage A2. The clutch when let in under certain circumstances i.e if not much gas is applied will judder a little, this can be overcome by varying driving style. I have searched the forum and read the postd on clutch and flywheel issue but they all seem to be related to the diesel.

the car I'm looking at is a 1.6, could it be the flywheel or is it likely to be just the clutch at issue.

Also at idle without the clutch depressed if I rest my foot on the clucth pedal I feel a fair amount of vibration coming up from the pedal, which I have never experienced in any other car. Is this normal?

The guy says he'll put in a new clutch. Should I stay well clear?

Welcome!
What's the mileage on this car? Do you know what sort of driving history it has had - e.g. mainly town driving, one or two owners etc?

In any case I'd say it does sound like a worn clutch and a clutch is a consumable part, so it's reasonable to expect them to be replaced at some point.

When my clutch was completely worn, i just get clutch slip all the time. Even slipping in 2nd gear under hard acceleration but never judder. And certainly no vibration because the A2's clutch is electrohydraulic. Mine is a 1.4 petrol and the clutch is 20mm smaller than the 1.6 IIRC but should be essentially the same.

That car could be just a worn clutch, but I would not commit until a test drive *after* he replaced/fix it.

Thanks for the prompt replies.

Dan not sure about the previous history but it's done 108K miles, all bar 2 services with Audi.

Hopefully the slight judder is just a clutch, but I'm still puzzled over the vibration coming through the clutch pedal at idle, you say you don't get this humps?

Thanks again

Nope, no vibration from the clutch pedal. It is drive by wire so I don't expect vibration from the clutch to transmit directly to the pedal anyway.

Sorry folks just picked up on this thread and would like to seek clarification and put down my own experience.

Humps, you say that the clutch is fly by wire. You sure, I have never heard of a fly by wire clutch. Accelerators yes, but not clutch. Can Humps or someone clarify this please?

My A2 FSI also has this vibration through the clutch pedal, and has done since I bought it 2.5years ago with a mere 19,000m on the clock.
The vibration is only felt in neutral if you gently rest your foot on the clutch pedal. I have never come accross another car that did this, and took it to be a "feature" rather than a fault. Certainly it has not changed doing this in 30,000 miles I have since driven! So the car the OP was looking at might not have been a lemon. Either that or mine is and I didn't realise.

I had better test drive another then, as the vibration would get on my nerves in stop start traffic.

Can any other FSI drivers contribute?

I think that Humps means that the clutch is hydraulically operated, meaning you push the pedal, an electric sensor reads this and tells a pump how far to push the clutch. This is why you shouldn't feel any vibrations through the pedal.

As far as I know the clutch on all A2's apart from the 1.2 TDi is a standard hydraulically operated unit. Maybe Humps is thinking of the power steering which is electrically powered hydraulic. This varies the ammount of assistance based on input from road speed and steering angle sensors

With regards to vibration through the clutch pedal, it could be a worn clutch release bearing

Cheers Spike
