Noise,, saying goodbye to that TDI hum.

Having read a few posts about the lack of decent sound insulation on these cars has anyone tried to do anything about it.

I am buying my A2 mainly for the pleasure of fitting a decent sound system in as part of an ongoing car audio project for my business.

My intentions are to remove all the interior trim,, I do this to all my cars,, and fit some decent quality sound deadening pad/sheets to the doors, side panels, bulkhead, floor pan, roof if possible and the boot area.

Was just wondering if anyone else had bothered and just how easy is it to remove the interior trim.

Previous experience with this material has made a major difference to the interior noise level in cars of the past which were quite tinny in their material and construction.

The sound deadening sheets are reasonably priced at [10x 500mm by 200mm] for less than £20 per box with a typical box doing at least two doors.

Just interested in other people’s experiences.

I have removed the interior light in the roof to fix my carphone microphone. Then I discovered that there'r nos insulation behind the light, you can directly see the roof. This causes the sound when it's raining. So I stuffed it with isolation material and it definetly makes a difference.
I think that removing the trim can be quite hard,l since Audi has fitted it very well. Maybe you can find the workplace manual about removing the trim somewhere, maybe on ebay.
I would be interested to follow in your steps as I think the A2 is very noisy around 100 - 120 Km/h, but I think that the biggest noise is caused by the mirrors. If you could be so kind to take some pictures and write some instruction on how to do it I will sureky try it.

Good luck !

Erskine (EF Max) - please do take some snaps of the removal of the trim and send them into the A2OC, I think everyone will be interested to see how well everything is bolted together behind and also what the your insulation looks like.

I wonder if you'd be able to solve the Exhaust Gas Recirculation problem through better insulation between the engine bay and back of dashboard...?

Most of the wind noise on the A2 is generated by the wiper blade. I have replaced mine with the new spec. and the car is MUCH quieter.
The previous set up wiped well for me and the new one is no different, just much less loud.
PS The workshop manual illustrates the optimum setting of the (old style) wiper arm and blade.

No problems guys,, I have to photograph the install of the equipment in any case as about £7K is going in there but first up is getting a decent alarm system fitted in,, in the trade I am known by my totally mental over the top alarm systems but my attitude is if you want it that bad you are going to have to work your theiving fingers off to get it.

Might be worth having a word with PaulJ who had/has an install in his A2. Looked like quite a bit of work went into that.

His images are on the A2OC, photos of the month, Sept 2002

Is your install going to be based on sound quality or just dB'S (volume)

Pure Sound Quality,, although the design of the bass box is one that I have used before and in it's last quise hit 150dB, those who know me, know that I am a SQ guy. The kit that I have is pure SQ kit.

The design of the present system is design to win competitions at an SQ+ level.. dB's I have grown out of.

Other than the style of the A2, my purchase is purely selfish in as much as it offers me an ideal platform to show off my skills.

Good luck with the system. Let us know when its finished so we can see some pics

Thank you.

It is going to be fun. I will need to re-do the front door panels to house a set of Digital Designs 6.5” speakers plus a set of square 2” Bandor units. Hopefully the Infinity tweeters will find a suitable home and somewhere on the dash maybe a new home for a centre channel horn driver.

Assuming that all goes well then there are two 31 Band 1/3 octave Audio Control EQT units, one for each door and these will be run from a custom built Genesis 5 Channel amp.

The bass box which I designed and built before I even brought the car is a design that I love to pieces. It use two 12” drivers in a 3 Chamber Internally Ported Box and is being run via it’s own Bass EQ unit and through a custom built Genesis Monobloc Power-amp which will have 1650wrms to upset things with.

The box will sit right up against the rear seat and lose me only 37cms of space on the floor. The Audi dealer really could not understand why I only came in to measure the trunk and nothing else.

That nice little space under the boot floor is where I will securely build all of this kit into and as I have two special batteries for the audio gear these will fit very nicely along side the normal battery.

As the CD system is digital to digital with no analog CD section, electrical noise should not be an issue as it is all fibre optic between the CD player and the DSP unit..

I tend to aim for what I call the headphone syndrome, whereby you can not tell where the speakers are but just feel like you are in the middle of the most sophisticated studio or concert set-up.

I also believe that a good set-up doesn’t have to be fiddled with and thus you can play any CD from Classical through to heavy Drum ‘N’ Bass and hear precisely what the musician recorded.

I will be having fun..

Has anyone considered filling the voids under the driver and passenger footwells? These must act as resonant chambers when empty.

That's a good thought !! I'll try that very soon !!

You can fill the voids above the interiorlights, makes the rain sounds a lot less worse !!

But how do you get the lights out, I got the lens off but couldn't see how to remove the lamp and switch unit.

If you remove the lens, there are two clips at the front of the unit. You have to press them back firmly. Then you can pull the whole unit down and remove it. The cable can be detached.

I stuffed the void with sound isolating stuff and I think it works. The rain makes less noise.

Next stop is the light unit in the back.

Offtopic, I'm still thinking of fitting W8 ambient lighting in the units. Only my girlfriend is not so keen on driving in a dimly red lit car.
