Nominations For 'How To'

Occasionally I read a post and think this is good and useful and really should be in the 'How To' section. As time passes these posts quickly drift into obscurity never to be found again even by Search, (at least by me, but not Spike!). The posts have clearly taken some effort to produce and their "loss" is a great pity.

I propose there should be a sticky thread 'Nominations For How To' in 'How To'. The mechanics of how it would work needs thinking about but I envisage something like .....

Any member can post in the nomination thread advocating inclusion of a piece by simply quoting a link and possibly a title, maybe with supporting text.

A 'Scrutineer' is appointed to manage the nomination thread and would indeed scrutinise a nomination, involving other 'experts' if needed.

The Scrutineer contacts the author if possible to give them opportunity to review their piece and discuss edits.

At the same time the Scrutineer posts a general "Notice Of Inclusion To 'How To'" to give anybody the chance to comment. [On a general level I think this important as the occasional appearance of these notices will continually remind members of the availability of the inclusion mechanism]

Edit: The piece is added to 'How To'

Sorry if what started off as a bright idea ended up being a little too formal and cumbersome, but I think there is some merit.

As I said just an idea. - Andy

Hi Andy,

I like that, you are right ,some great ideas come and go and if the moderators just happen to be busy the post can be missed.

This thread could be used to start the process? it even has the right title?

If you want to edit your post above and change the wording to ask people to post their siggestions for "how tos" here, that would be one way, or I could do it for you. Happy to post it instead but I think that your suggestion deserves credit to you?

If you want to change the wording on your post as an introduction to the use of it then I will delete my post and it should be clear to others how to use it.

But whichever way you want it done I think we should make it happen.

We can make it a sticky, we just need to check with the rest of the team

Cheers
Steve B

I totally agree - I’ve got a list of post links saved that have a useful - how to in them somewhere that is relevant to me and my needs.

The How to List
http://www.a2oc.net/forum/archive/index.php/t-27103.html

This is somewhat influenced by my car's needs and I've removed most of the upholstery and 'how to spray paint' links.

I belong to one other forum which operates like this using stickys.

To me it would seam better to have the stickys at the top of each section the thread is started in. This keeps it in the correct forum section and makes it easy for the user to see the relevant information in the topic thread instead of trawling through a sticky thread with lots of sticky on lot's of different subjects.

Just a suggestion.

Hi Steve,

This is my reply for your post #2.

"I like that, you are right ,some great ideas come and go and if the moderators just happen to be busy the post can be missed."
Yes, great posts come and go, that's the concern, but not just current posts being missed - it might be a very old post from 2007 for example you have unearthed with a search if it makes a good 'How To'.

"This thread could be used to start the process? it even has the right title?" - Intended!

If you want to edit your post above and change the wording to ask people to post their siggestions for "how tos" here, that would be one way, or I could do it for you. Happy to post it instead but I think that your suggestion deserves credit to you?
Not interested in credit, just to start something that might be useful. No rush to do anything, I think it needs a lot more thought. You could change the title of this thread now to "Discussion On Nomination Procedure For 'How To'" and worry about the sticky nomination capture thread later.

I think an alphabetical index would be good - ideally with a simple description of what the how to relates to. It’s a bit of a librarian job.

Hi Alex(Pinkythelabrat),

Like you I too have a stack of bookmarks of threads, in fact so many I need an index! and thanks for all the links must have taken ages.

Now a spot of philosophising. 'What is a 'How To'? I envisaged a complete guide on how to do a job from beginning to end.
Unfortunately most of your links are inaccessible to me not being a taptalk user, but I suspect many are more discussion threads of problems encountered with a specific job. (because there was no 'How To'!) not quite the same thing.

But it has set me thinking. Yes, I can see the benefit of a bibliography, either as you present it in your post, as links listed against a job, or maybe links for that job within the 'How To' in true academic style at the foot of the guide.

The link I could use was door micro switches which I think is already in How To, but of course the Scrutineer would check this.

I’m thinking Haynes manual style.

There is a really good site called Evilution. It’s for the smart car. Maybe take a look? He recently put up a paywall for the advanced fixes. He kept the simple stuff free but anything more extreme is a £10 a year. Fair enough - it’s taken him years.

https://www.evilution.co.uk/

Trust me, without this I wouldn’t have managed to fill the washer bottle on the most recent smart car - it’s WELL hidden!

HI,

I will definitely look at doing this shortly, for the next few days I will be looking after the relaunched "New Marketplace" and so I will have to focus my attention on that until it settles down, but I am 100% behind the "How to" threads being listed properly and easy to find.

As for a alphabetical sequence, I am not sure, for example if you are looking for help with the door locks the help might be titled Driver's Microswitch solution, or fuel flap not opening, lock failure etc.

I would prefer the titles to be seen as vital in a search and so would try to ensure that they contain ther right search words.
It also reduces the effort required, slotting in a subject into the correct place in the sequence sounds easy, but hopefully we can come up with a really great way of handling thge "How tos" I think the "How to Index" page demonstrates just how useful it can be. So if we can look at improving that approach perhaps. Definitely the next area to address after the marketplace is bvedded in I think?

There was but the new site operates differently and so it is no longer correct.

It does need it because I see so many people using the attachement link insteead of the correct icon
The one circled below.

If nobody volunteers I will certainly do it, but I am fully occupied with the new MartketPlace at the moment.
