Not directly a fuel issue more of a fueling issue

Recently, I've been brimming my tank to work out my MPG more accurately. But my car is sometimes feeling less than smooth. This may be unrelated as it occurred after a recent service.

But, I was wondering if the diesel tank has a breather to it. If not then it may be creating a vacuum. I noticed that when I filled a tank part full it seemed to run better. It's all very subjective I realise and could be all sorts of things but is the tank vented in any way to avoid vacuum?

Thanks in anticipation

You could try pressing the "burping" button just inside the filler neck when you fill up. Not only do you get more fuel in it vents trapped air in the tank. Did you have the fuel filter changed in the service?

When fuelling, don't open the nozzle fully. Squeeze it about half way, and use your finger to judge, so you can do the same next fill. When the nozzle clicks of, stop (unless you're sure it's not close to full). To measure mpg, you don't have to brim it, just be repeatable. It's worth remembering that fuel expands as it warns up, and the fuel you put in is cold (it's been underground, so about 12 degs in summer). If you brim the rank, you may well loose some over the next day.
Mac.

I did ask them to but the plastic on the filter was damaged and they couldn't get a new one. I'm sure someone in here makes a new filter screw not for the bottom. I did ask all fluids to be changed but same engine coolant, same brake fluid, same fuel filter. Not quite what I had hoped for. New Brembo discs and pads feel much better though.

Chat to Paul @depronman about the filter screw. He will help you. Change the fuel filter, oil filter and cabin filter? And most of all change your GARAGE...
I did pay for a K&N air filter. Not because it needs more performance but it should be long lasting and products less waste and landfill. They did do the cabin filter. But yes I do need to look around for another garage.

Let me know if you need the fuel filter drain screw. It fits the latter plastic diesel filter housings found on mid 2002 tdi onwards replacing the plastic screw which breaks when you look at it

The replacement is machined from aircraft quality aluminium billet
They are £23 plus £4.10 postage
Let me know if you want one
I have stock

Cheers. Paul

That would be ideal. Can you message be directly and I'll give you my address and arrange payment? Many thanks Paul.
I have no idea when it was last changed...

Interestingly enough (and I mentioned this at the time!) I've bought 2 of these air filters.

The first I gave to the garage and asked them to fit it as part of my initial car buying service.

The second when I found out the paper one that was in the car when I bought it was still in it some 12 months later. Original one had been nicked - garage is no longer in business.

K&N filters - I’ve seen tests done that show these are not as effective at filtering as standard paper elements.

I’m surprised that there seems to be a fair bit of suppprt from them on here - I’ll be replacing my K&N with OEM personally.

And eventually the lumpy running was found to be rubbish tyres which the previous owner had put on. Changed to Initial and Bridgestone and the car runs perfectly smooth. Thanks for all those who came up with possible solutions.
