The screws in the rear number plates are known as being a weak point, as they do corrode.
If you are lucky enough to get the lenses off without cracking and the screws out without drilling then it’s a good day!
Please note that the screw provided to the part number (N01396626) in the parts catalogue does not match the old screw. Indeed they will not fit into the recess in the lens.

First thing do to is throw away the original screw. This acid free stainless screw fits just fine. Do not overtight.

I changed my screws about 10 years ago, with Halfords Stainless Steel screws.

Because I knew the job was done I only looked at them this year, and they`re as bad as the original screws I took out, if not worse.

So much for Halfords packaging...

Guess there were not stainless then?

Even the best marine grade stainless does not resist rusting for ever, if exposed to sufficient water for long enough. Unless your screws are specifically identified as being made from A2 or A4 stainless steel, they are unlikely to last very long at all.

My 2005 Galaxy mk2 number plate screws are as good as the day they left the factory, hope the stainless ones I have i the A2 last, a bit of rubber grease added to them should also help

The A2 rear number plate lights are a desperately poor piece of design which suck water in. The screws rust because they are sitting in water which has no means of escape.

A bit off topic, but our solid oak letterbox was also treated with 'marine' varnish and it didn't last one Sicilian winter... Go figure
