Number plate screws rusted

Hi all I’m going to change the horrible worn out number plates on Boris but before I do I’ve come across this. The bolts have rusted that much there is no head on them anymore what should I do to get them out ?:)

Thanks

Mole grips would probably crush them there that bad ?. Drilling them out I’d rather not do if I have to I will but anyone else got anymore ideas ?

Thanks

I never use screws .... that's the way for me for many Years! Use 3M VHB double-sided tape and have a smooth unobstruced plate which looks good and is easy to clean! You can just grind the heads off those screws if you go my way.

90 degree pliers? To be honest in the interests of speed and simplicity, I concur with the viewpoint of fragmenting whatever rusty junk is holding the plate on by using a largish diameter drill bit, pull off the plate, then use either mole grips or 90 degree pliers to get some purchase on the exposed stump and twist it out (or snap it off, in which case drill it flush and screw new screws into the plastic behind the numberplate - or as David says above, use a few strips of good quality 3M VHB foam tape to hold the plate in place.

Hi David,

what variety of this 3M VHB tape have you used? There are 4 varieties on 3M website...

Thanks,

Andre

There are several 3M VHB high performance double-side foam tapes that do the job (waterproof, high adhesion etc.) - some are more temperature resistant than others and work for heated mirrors as well so you need to do a wee bit of research. Various widths & foam thicknesses but genuine are pretty good across the board depending on absolute application. Just need to watch out on Ebay and other web markets for "3m" tape ... where you get 3 metres of unbranded junk that sticks for 5 minutes if that once the going gets vaguely tough.
