Oil/lubricant in the passenger footwell

In my 1.6 FSI there always seems to be a film of oil/lubricant in the passenger footwell under the carpet. I have wiped it clean a couple of times but when I was installing my Pro boost ecu there it was again. Seems like it's coming from under the gear knob console. What would be source of this? The car drives with no problems. Really smooth gear change.
Thanks

Do you have climate control? If so a good chance that the climate drain tube is either split or disconnected and it is runng down into the footwell.

Try and use a UV light or a white tissue and see if it is fluorescent green in colour. Graham could be right thinking it is coming from the evaporator area with it actually being a/c compressor oil.

It could even be engine coolant coming from the heater matrix, in which case it would be pink-ish in colour. Usually the only way out from the climate airbox is via the drain tube.

When you wipe it, does it mark your wiper, as would wiping a dipstick, or is it just a clean oil mark?
Mac.
It's more like clean oil. I have a feeling it might be residue from some past failure. I have wiped the area really well this time (also some on the edge on the driver's side). Will check again in a few days to see if there's any fresh "leak".
