Oily smell via air vents.

We've had the car 3 days now. I know the aircon needs gassing so we're running without at the moment. We're getting a slight burning, oily smell through air vents in the car.

Is this common?

We have an oily intake so, as suggested, we probably need to change the oil seperator. Related?
Doesn't smell like exhaust.

It's a 1.4 petrol. Thanks.

Could very well be the source of the oil mist / smell. Worth checking all pipework for splits and badly fitting joints.

Had the same problem with "the deliquent". Pipes and new oil seperator seems to have done the trick. Sadly not a cheap fix. The seperator was from Febi, and the pipes from TPS.

Good luck

Thanks Simon, sound promising. Never considered TPS, we have one locally, I'll look the parts up.
I'm also running a 21 year old BMW e39 and a focus mk1 so I'm quite open minded on prices and can my hands dirty.

Hi,
The pipes are the ones that run from the seperator up to the inlet manifold on an AUA engine. Crewe Audi will tell you which ones they are.
I got the part numbers from them and bought from TPS, I'll have to look for the invoice. About £50.00 odd for the two pipes. The Febi Bilstein oil seperator was £70.00 via a well known auction site. The Febi item was about £40.00 less than an Audi part via TPS. Personally I rate Febi as being very high quality.

HiPaul,

Just read your other thread, so yours is an AUA engine as well. Not wishing to state the obvious, but cambelt and water pump as a matter of priority!

Welcome to the club.

Best wishes,

Simon

Thanks. Its on the radar. The belt and pump were done bang on 5 years ago but only 20k miles. I'll get a quote anyway and take it from there

Yeah, I use febi parts for anything non mechanical. Eg hoses, plastics etc os I'm happy to use the febi oil seperator, I can get it £50 posted plus the hoses once I can work out the part numbers.

If you're getting a lot of engine bay type smells coming in, make sure the snorkel that goes from under scuttle to underside of bonnet vent is secure and has its seal, otherwise your HVAC system will be drawing air in from engine bay rather than outside proper.

a seal you say? i have no idea what its supposed to look like to compare it too....

more googling i feel

Here we are ...

Main mode of failure is that this vent / duct is held up into place via three (I think) self tapping screws. These either rust through or shear off during work, leaving the duct hanging down. In turn this means it doesn't match the bonnet correctly and often, compresses the foam seal in the wrong areas. In turn this makes the bonnet difficult to slide fully home.

And here's what it marries up to on the bonnet:

I have to say, this wasn't (just) brilliant lateral deduction on my part, so much as noticing it on the FSi Sport only last weekend, which explained the smell and poor bonnet fit  In my case it looks like wipers off, scuttle cover off (carefully), drill and insert new self tappers.

Have checked and all present and correct per your photos, thanks for looking for me. Appreciated

I had one loose pipe once in the area behind that intake - I'd take a quick look-see to see if something obvious is hanging around. Throttle body is at the right at the back, and teh EGR feeds into that, which could be a source.
