ok i must be going soft

Want something that is totally independent so no plugging in mains etc.. some thing that I can just flick on as soon as I start the engine and get instant heat with in seconds . I need to reaclimatize to uk weather . But that could take some time ..
heated seats retrofit then? Probably your best bet.

If you do have the Webasto heater it is I think better than the electric aux heater. Down side is it burns diesel to work. There are many articles on the Webasto heater, have a search around and you will see the requirements that need to be met for it to work if it is functioning. Have a chat with the previous owner off line for some guidance.

It's just a domestic fan heater that I run from a mains extention through the car door - nothing special!
I want something that is totally independent from using mains . . Jump in the car start it flick the switch that will be located on the center console and instanto heato ! . Only to use for 5 or so mins till heat start coming through the vents . Thinking about one either side of the dash . Located next to the little front windows in front of the doors.. . Just angled up towards the screen

Now that we've got a better idea of your preferred specification, it sounds like you need a couple of gas camping stoves then.... what could possibly go wrong? :). Plus bearing in mind where you used to live you could chuck a couple of shrimp on while things are warming up...

If you do have a Webasto, then modifying it to act as a pre-heater might well be the best option. I'm sure I've read of this having been done before....

I've recently bought one of those 12v plug in electric heaters to help demist my Series 3 Land Rover windscreen. I would not advise them as a solution to what you want. They produce very little heat but are a huge draw on the vehicle electrics (most are 150-200w). If you run them for anything more than a few minutes at a time you can either blow fuses or even melt wires (if you use two this will certainly happen)! They are meant for demisting the windscreen and will not produce enough heat to warm the interior up.

But would that mean having a electrical plug to gaff about with every morning ?

No. The webasto runs off the diesel in the tank. When I looked into it you could have a remote to turn it off or on, or have it fitted with a timer so it comes on automatically in the morning (I think some controllers you can even control with your phone).

You have any details of the remote start etc?

I had a webasto in my old 530d and it was brilliant. You could set a timer in the climate control to pre heat the car. This is definitely the way to go, even better if you can fit a remote control.

I'm just so use to having pretty much instant warmth coming through the vents so I am open to ideas . $$$ is a factor though .

confirmed after this mornings frost .. webasto not working and no heat from drivers side wheel area .
Is the econ button illuminated?
If it is the Webasto won’t work.

Have you bled the air out in the hose going to the Webasto unit(small screw on hose) ?

if the car is new to you the Webasto can be held off if it has to many failed starts, this needs to be cleared using VCDS. (a scan will show this)

If its diesel semi synthetic 2 stroke oil will help engine & Webasto.

test unit with frozen ice pop on the sensor in lower grill if not below 7c
