'OOH' noise from egr solenoid???

I have an A2 1.4 TDI SE 03 plate...

I really like the car, the styling and mostly the fuel economy!

BUT, there is one thing that does annoy me allot! and it only becomes apparent once the engine is warm, after a journey of at least 20 minutes.

The fault is best described as an ‘ooh’ noise that lasts for about ½ a second when pulling away in 1st gear, or even dabbing the accelerator upon engine idle.

I have taken the car into my Audi dealer in Chester, and they have said …

” OH YEA, ALL A2’S DO THAT NOISE, IT COMES FROM THE EGR SOLENOD, THAT IS FITTED TO A STEEL BRACKET THAT IS FIXED TO THE METAL CAR WITHIN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT”

So …. Do your A2’s make this weird noise?

I was also told that there is a modification available, and that Audi have produced rubber feet that can be fitted in-between the EGR solenoid bracket and the car … but wait for it ! The cost alone without fitting is £70.00 !

If this is the case, how come Audi don’t recognise that this is a fault and fit the damn things for free?

After all for them to create a modification they must be accepting that there is a fault, mustn’t they??

I would really appreciate any comments you may have with this, if any and of course any advice you may have.

aahhh!!! The return of the moo

This noise was affectionately named the moo on this site many years ago. Your AUDI dealer is basically correct, as nearly all A2's do it. I think others on this forum has had repairs done for free.

Hi Carl, welcome.
It's probably the EGR valve. It's always been refered to as that and not an EGR solenoid.
It's a recognised fault. As Kaine says, others have successfully had it replaced under warranty. If Chester aren't prepared to do it, try another dealer.

Does this occur in the 1.6 sport, the only gripe we have is on start up................and this sounds like a tractor !!

Tactile, as you, without a doubt, know the 1.6 FSI is not equipped with a turbo, hence no EGR valve hence no moo-ing in that sense.
FSI's sounding a bit rough on cold/first start is also an accepted phenomenon. Just like the appearent loss of power (which you seemed to have cured with some throttle body reset procedure, but that's off-topic now). Have a search in the forum for 1.6 noises or something like that ;)

Carl, my 2003 Tdi never ever made the moo sound. I thought it was restricted to somewhat earlier versions. However, I did have rattling fuel lines. Your 'ooh'ing isn't like that, is it? Mine made an annoying buzzing sound when you depressed the accellerator while driving somewhere in the 2000-3500 rpm rev range...

Thanks for your comments, It has made me feel alot happier in the knowledge that others have had the same problem! I have had my wife dab the accelerator pedal, and felt the EGR valve whilst she is doing it, and there is a definate vibration coming from there. Do you think the mod, with rubber feet will reduce it, or do you think I should be plumbing for a replacment valve?
I have wrtiten to the service manager at Audi Chester today asking for his assistance ... not holding my breath though! I'll let you know! thanks tabs

I must have been lucky not be visited by a bunch of cows on my 2003 Tdi....;)

Well Carl, I hope you can get it sorted out through another dealer...

Just thought I would let you know that Audi Chester have offered to modify my car for free! Fair do's to them ...
I just hope it makes the mooing a little less obvious!

i'll let you know that too :)

Hi again,

Had the mod done ... it has certainly made the noise allot les obvious. But, you can still hear it! Think I will have to get used to it now ... unless you think it's worth persuing a new valve?

We have the 'moo' in our 2001 TDI. Also the very metallic noise on very cold start ups - also sometimes said to be the EGR valve I believe. But no rattling pipes - as far as I know! This thread has been useful as we are now just 1500 miles from a visit to Tonbridge Audi....
