what are your thoughts on the open sky roof on the a2?

as many of you probably know im searching around for an a2,but i have only been in an a2 with the standard roof.

does anyone wish they had the open sky roof on their a2?(summertime)
is the open sky roof prone to leaks,or wind noise?
anyone had any problems with their open sky or expensive repairs?

Both our A2's had/have Open Sky & we love it - especially if you take out the sunscreens. It really lightens up the inside.
There have been a few mentions of the roof going out of alignment which requires a large jig to get it working correctly again. Any spares seem to be pretty expensive as well.
Quite a common occurance seems to be a sticky moving back glass panel. This can be remedied witha good clean and a spray of silicon/teflon or similar around the moving parts & mating glass surfaces.

hi rob thanks for the reply.

how far does the roof open? is it just like a standard sized sunroof or bigger.
also do you notice alot of wind noise from the roof when closed?

thanks paul.

I love my open sky its great in the summer bit noisey though. If you dont open it in the winter it can get stuck (second section wont lift up) but a bit of silicon spray sorts it out

We have a Peugeot 307SW that has a glass roof that doesn't open, so now it's great to have the Open Sky on the A2 that opens nice and wide for a small car - no probs yet and I hope it stays that way!!! (thanks for the tips re: cleaning & silicone spray)
Just noticed a 2004 A2 TDI SE with Open Sky + extras on E-bay at £7100 - bet it sells for more than that!!! (I thought that all the A2 Storm's had 17" alloys, this one doesn't???)

open sky roof

Might be of interest, brand new open sky roof for sale in the latest audi magazine.I think the price is £500 o.n.o....

I have open-sky, and love it!!!

Its way bigger than a standard sunroof, wind noise isn't too bad, you can drive with it open when its a nice clear and cold night in autumn/spring and have the heating on, nice and toasty amd warm inside, gazing up at the stars....:D

I've removed the sun blind too, it makes a huge difference.

manhatton, are you satch aswell? if so, then I'm only down the road from you (look on the googlemap) you live behind Orton Longville motors by the look of it...

Let me know if you want o have a look at the opensky on my A2, I know what it was like looking for an A2, my one was the only one I saw with opensky!

Cheers

hi mate! yes its me! this is the username i will be using from now on.

that would be great if i could check out the open sky roof for real!
then i can make a decision on which A2 to hunt down, lol.

will have to arrange something in the near future, for a meet. where are you in peterborough?

just had a look on the google map!

your only 2 miles away from me,lol. and the funny thing is i used to live about 15 seconds away from you many years ago in braybrook!

my old house is probably 20 meters away from yours! strange!

A couple of the comments mention removing the sun blind to allow more light - is this easy to remove (and retro fit if needed)???

And ULP you really should get your friend to open the sunscreen it make the cabin of the 307SW light, airy and a nice place to be - I never close mine (it's probably jammed in the open position!!)

Fairly easy to remove. I think you just need a screwdriver to wedge in between the plastic frame & roof lining to release the clips (perhaps about 10 of in total). I did it last year & found it easy - just use the correct amount of persuasion.

having open sky on a black car is so cool it all blends in nicely

Also the panels in front and behind the two main sunroof panels are tinted glass too, so you get full glass from the windscreen to the rear window, it adds to the nice design of the A2.

I love my Open Sky as well and will never want a car again without such a big roof! The best feature by far is that in the summer you can park and leave it open just a few millimeters to let all the hot air out. Thus even though you only have a bit of glass and little insulation in your roof, you return to a car that is appreciably cooler than one with a fixed roof. How Peugeot (and now Honda with the new Civic unfortunately as well) can get away with a fixed in glass roof I'll never know. Those cars must be so warm in summer and forces you to be very un-green and use the AC in extrimis!

I also highly recommend taking the blind out. It does not stop heat build up in the least and only provides a tiny bit of shade.

It has been posted several times now but to get rid of the clunk when opening the roof is to lubricate the rubber seals with silcone spray. I have the so called clunk if the roof hasnt been opened for a few months. I found it wouldnt open the final stage last year after not being opened during the winter months. But it just needed a bit of helping hand. I now open the roof once a month during the winter period and that solves the problem.

I havent got air con on my A2 and I thought it was a mistake not having it. But to be honest I dont find the car getting that hot inside during the summer. In fact it gets warmer with the windows open. it maybe that the heavily tinted open sky helps to keep the heat out.
