Opensky DIY servicing

I currently have 2 cars with an openskys which are currently both fully working and go all the way back. However I would like to keep them this way!
What are your tips? What lube do you use? Where do you buy it? How do you clean it beforehand what clothes etc do you use?

I have called my local Audi this morning to see if it is a service they offer, they don’t seem to have the process or any reference to it on their system. Awaiting pricing...

£106 from Audi for an opensky service... is this worth it? They recommend it every 2 years.

No, I used WD40 contact cleaner with a tea cloth, then literal coats of lithium grease whilst working the roof back and fourth. Also coat all the rubber parts with a silicone grease or Vaselene

How long have you been doing this? And how long have you had the car?

Ours has only been working since last month, so I can’t comment on the longevity.
Look at the runners in which the glass panels fix to, they are the moving parts, they have feet that go into the grooves of the track, that’s where you need the grease. The cables are not meant to be greased as they have a felt coating to reduce friction, you cannot get to them anyway.

You shouldn't use Vaseline as it's oil based so will damage the seals over time.

Simon.

Great idea for a thread Edwrai, it will be useful to some of the newer members including myself as i would like to keep the dream machines roof working well into the future.

Ok so on one of my openskys today I spent hours cleaning the seals and treating with Gummi Pflege which has done an amazing job no longer do either panel go “pop” when opening it hard to get to the inner and outer seals at the back and took a lot of adjusting of the position to get to all the areas I needed to treat.
The tracks seem to be very lubed so I have redone these it also moves very smoothly. Very happy.

I’m going to take the other to Audi on Wednesday as this is a little jerky, and I don’t want it to break while I’m doing it as I also covered it in silicon last year which I don’t think did the trick if anything I think it has made the movement worse... we will see!

I’m not being funny but Audi will do nothing, I don’t think they know their way around these roofs.

I suspect you may be correct. Not too long after Audi Worthing replaced my OpenSky in Jun-2014, the roof panels went out of alignment. Rather than adjust the panels they installed a second new OpenSky to my car

Unless there has been an update the dealers don't have much to go on as the servicing instructions are rather basic

Cheers Spike

I agree, and the service instructions for later model cars like the Q7 are a lot more detailed and even specify Audi brand Krytox grease (the ultimate lube) for the seals.
If however the A2 roof is just serviced according to the guidelines in my previous post then the results would be disappointing.

As other posts have indicated, cleaning off the old grease and grime is the starting point, followed by the application of a decent grease for the tracks and all the mechanism pivot points. Then close and open the roof a couple of times to distribute the grease and re-apply as necessary. Finish off by treating all the seals and mating surfaces which usually entails the roof being positioned in several stages of opening and tilting for full access.

Top tip for greasing the tracks is to use a small stiff bristle paint brush with the end bent at an angle so it looks like this - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Uniqat-P...786024&hash=item467bf64a67:g:s5AAAOSwl5Va7FO~
