Operation Rear View Dash Cam

My behind-the-rear-view mirror dash cam has had it. I am terrible at reversing near to things - it gives me fear. Combine these two and ‘Operation Rear View Dash Cam’ is born!

My plan - to fit one of those Dash cams that cover your existing rear view mirror and have a touch sensitive screen on them and, critically, a rear view camera!

I have mounted a nice, cheap mirror and it’s actually pretty nice looking - straight over the existing mirror. A bit dim compared to the original but with all these badly aimed HID headlights on the road I think that might be a bonus.

I’m waiting on a new micro SD card to check quality and so on.

Now to fit the rear view camera...

I’ve made a little block for the rear view camera to sit inside the tailgate window. I have no desire to have it hanging out over my numberplate (thanks Paul for the idea).

Cables are run from the rear view mirror, down the A pillar, down inside the trim panels and along the door sill trim edges and all the way to the boot - coming out just behind the rear seat backrest locking mounts so far (definitely not to Tom standards I fear)... and now I’m stuck!

The ideal way to get the cables into the tailgate would be to follow the original wiring but some poking and prodding at the cable carrying rubber from body to tailgate has led me to think I would need to destroy my headlining and the rubber grommets to manage it. Has anyone managed to run cables that way and can offer advice?

It’s freezing! I still can’t see any good way of getting in to the OEM cable conduit and just hanging the worse free from roof lining to hatch means they get trapped in the door seal when it closes - and it looks awful!

Someone has done this well and totally wants to share their genius with me!

SD card arrived so off to plug that in in the meantime.

The dashcam I have is this one.

Granted its not exactly what you require because the rear view image is far to small on the screen but the same as you , I had to run the cable from the front camera to the rear.
I simply ran it from the centre of the windscreen above the rear view mirror going right toward the drivers side inside the headlining, there's plenty room and give, just use your fingers to tuck it out of sight.
it then ran along the headlining above the drivers door and rear door and it pops out within the boot area.

I need to tidy that up a bit, this cable then goes along the top of the tailgate door and up towards the rear camera.

Like I said, this set up wont help you re reversing but if you aim to put the rear camera in the same position then the cable route would be the same.
Hope that helps a bit dood.
John.

That helps loads! I should have thought to keep the cable high but assumed the headlining would be the more complex route to take. Silly me.

Thanks for the pics but how does the cable cross from the end of the headlining at the c-pillar on to the tail gate? It looks like it would either pinch or sag a cable down when opened!

It is possible to get extra wires through the original rubber boot but bloody difficult
You certainly won’t get connectors through
I used a piece of stainless steel thin wire with a 180 deg bend in the last inch and some rubber grease as a lubricant
Push the stainless steel wire through the rubber gaiter It helps to pull the gaiter from the body shell and tailgate first
I recon it took me an hour to get the cabling through it with lots of swearing at it for good measure
Best of luck

Thanks Paul.

Not good news. The camera has a 30mm x 5mm plastic plug on the bit that would need pushed through and it looks to be 5 core wire connecting with shielding. The manual warns against splicing into the wire to extend so that would probably apply to cutting off the plug to push through the rubber boot. I was hoping you’d say it was easy.

I’ll maybe fashion a cable conduit and just try to make it look okay. Function over form. I’ll see how my other responder managed the interface.
