OSS 'Open Sky System' Motor mount

Probably a long shot, but are these still available?

I have one out of the last batch. It was a smaller batch and the ally plate doubled in price so the price had to go up to £165 from £140
Metal prices continue to rise so if there is a further batch the price will likely have to increase again. Totally out of my control

Is it easy to install (i.e. without having to dismantle the whole headliner, but just using the opening where the reading light / oss module is?

Yes it can be done through the light panel hole in the headlining. You need a dremmel type tool with a 90deg angle head. This is used to cut through the original soft alloy mount
It is a bit fiddly but very doable. I’ve done 5 so far like this and one with the head lining out which is some what easier

Give yourself 2 to 3 hours when doing the first one

Hi Paul,

I've just come across the OSS thread. I have a non functioning OSS which packed up about two years ago. I had almost written off any prospect of getting it repaired. From memory, the problem occurred when I had opened the roof on a very hot day, on trying to close it, I got an awful noise as the motor struggled to close it. With a bit of manual help, I managed to get it closed. I think your mod may provide a solution to getting it working again.
Question is, do you have parts available please and how difficult is the fitting. I shudder at the prospect of headlining removal and wouldn't know where to start.

I don’t have any motor mounts left. I would consider making another batch in the future if there was enough interest
A member may well contact you offering you one that I sold him from the original batch. His A2 was stolen before he could fit the motor mount

It is a doable diy job to fit the motor mount through the light cluster hole in the headlining but you do need a dremmel with a 90 deg angle head and cutting discs to remove the original mount

Cheers. Paul

Price is £140 delivered in the UK if you get in on the first or second batch, it will be more expensive after the initial two batches, as I envisable having to set up to make one or two after the initial batches, and this is far more time consuming

Hello --- your detailed post re open sky roof problem is of interest to me . I have a 2004 late model 1.6 with 40,000 miles a good car with sat nav added , cruise control etc, but roof just started to fail. opening and closing ( just ) its pulling to one side and making noised and jamming, after a few goes I managed to close it. A fellow menber on the club says my problem is what you have posted here ? I will try to remove moter and look inside in next few days, if I can see an obvious issue I would be very interested in your new machined motor mount. You perhaps will have a view as to if my problem is likely to be motor mount ?

Thanks

Richard Hosking

Very likely to be the motor mount
I will be making another batch over the next month or so

Cheers. Paul

If you remove the motor and try to move each cable with a flat screwdriver you may get an idea if the cable has become broken at the other end. If the cables move but do not move the roof panel then they have become detached and the whole roof needs to come out for a repair.

I would consider manufacturing these for members, but there is a lot of machining time and two pieces of aluminium plate involved and therefore they will not be costing pennies. I still need to work out the cost to manufacture as the first one made involved a lot of tweakes to the Gcode and the second one made still needed some slight adjustments and therefore I do not have representative machine times.
I intend to make another one at the weekend and will hopefully have no changes to make now to the Gcode and as such I can get representative times.

It will be cheaper if a production run is done as its quicker to make say 5 tops, then 5 bottomes, than to make them one at a time as there is only one machine set up per set

If you are interested in one of these then please post on this thread, no commitment at this time just showing your potential interest, this will give me an idea of numbers for a batch and therefore a price.
Simple scenario is the larger the run the cheaper will be the price

Cheers,
Paul
Hi Paul, wow that is an amazing peice of engineering, I would absolutely love to order one as my sky roof just broke in the open position lol. Many thanks kind regards Ian

Hi Paul how are you today? What a absolutely fantastic piece of engineering, I would love to order one and will pay straight away as my skyroof broke tonight in the fully open position lol. Kind regards Ian baker

It will be a month or so before they are ready
I’m extending my workshop ATM so until this is finished I can’t get near the milling machine
