P1612 18020 - Engine control module incorrectly coded

A2Dreamer

A2OC Donor
I've just replaced my EGR (1.4MPI) and had to use VAGCOM to get rid of the fault code for the MIL to go out. No problem there...

I did see an odd fault code, that pops up immediately after clearing codes, this is persistent and won't go away. In all other regards, the car seems to perform fine!

1679836074041.png

On checking the coding, this shows up as 00119 (see pic below)

1679836045859.png

Which is odd, as I've certainly not changed it. I have scanned the car previously and don't recall seeing this error.

By my reckoning, it should be 00071 (it has ABS, Airbags and A/C, and is manual)

Grateful for any thoughts here before I go ahead and change it to see if it gets rid of the fault code?

Evening,

I'm unable to assist with you understanding how the engine software coding could have changed but its certainly wrong. To be honest Ive never bothered to check the coding figure before but have a few examples to share to confirm your thoughts:

Although your guess of the coding should be 00071, the above 2x AUA and 1x BAD VCDS Reports suggest it might actually be 00051. Perhaps others could share their VCDS scan reports to confirm this. Either way, as you already know, your coding is incorrect.

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Edit: If you still have access to your previous scan reports then it’s worth comparing the stored coding from before. Not sure why the 3x above examples are 00051 as they most definitely had airbags installed. I would try 00051 but this is just a best guess from the minimal evidence I have here. In total I’ve got 7 different 1.4 AUA/BBY reports which all have the same 00051 coding.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks so much, that's absolutely stellar and certainly confirms my thoughts that the coding's wrong, and also points me in the right direction.

I'll have go with both 00051 per your reports, and 00071 per my thoughts and see if the error code goes away.

I'm pretty sure I'm interpreting the coding correctly, so a mystery as to why yours are showing 51 and not 71... Also a mystery as to how mine's completely incorrect!!

I'll report back when I have the chance to change it (away with work for a few days now, then on leave for a bit over Easter - so won't be for a couple of weeks...)

Again, thanks for your support.

Kind regards

Pete

No problems Pete,

I have absolute confidence that adjusting the coding is the right thing to do and will
Rectify the fault. What I’m not so sure about is why the coding was seemingly incorrect in the first place.

I know ECUs can fail but have not come across one which has somehow changed the software coding, my knowledge in this area is quite limited though.

Looking forward to reading the outcome when you have time to get the laptop out.

Kind regards,

Tom

It's odd, but a member on the Mk1 TT Forum has just reported a similar in incorrect coding and again, no idea when or how it changed.
Mysterious ways.
Mac.

I don't think this is 'dark forces', more Bosch having a well designed and fail safe ECU.

The coding is held in EEPROM memory, this is know to fail over time and 20ish years is concidered as a lot of time in EEPROM terms, so 'some' EEPROM's in 'some' ECU's are liable to failure.
The ECU will almost certainly have a default value that is used should the EEPROM memory fail, this will either replace the values in the EEPROM or will be loaded instead of the EEPROM value (due to it being corrupt) when the ECU powers up.

Try recoding the ECU, if it accepts and retains the coding over several days then it is likely that this will be 'one of those things' that are never properly explained, alternatively the ECU may either refuse to accept the recoding or accept the recoding but forget it either immediatly or in a matter of secs/mins.
We need to remember that the ECU is a computer in its own right, ask yourself how many PC/laptops do we have that are still in daily use at 20+ years old and function perfectly without a glitch, don't get me wrong the ECU doesn't run MS Windows and utilise a mechanical hard drive else it would have failed FAR sooner, but the ECU is still a set of components soldered onto a board likely using lead free solder and subject to some heat changes and vibration, though far less so that in cars which have the ECU located in the engine bay.
