Park sensor (PDC) problem

Hey guys,

Yesterday morning I brought my car from the upholsterer. He did some minor things to my seats and installed seat heating pads but just physically. The only thing they did electronically was to disconnect the battery to save it from depletion. But I just recognized that the PDC simply did not work, no sound at all, neither when I put it in reverse nor when I'm close to something with the back of the car.
Do you have any idea about it, what happened, how to fix it? ❓

Afternoon George,

The best thing to do is get a scan done with VCDS as this will show you where the fault is.

As you’re not getting and sound at all it could simply be the the sounder unit (little speaker) is at fault. It could also be the harness from the car to the control module so the car isn’t finding the whole PDC set up/installation.

Get a scan done and post the results on here. Someone should be able to offer assistance/guidance.

I have PDC fitted but it’s not connected to the 4 sensors as I e not pulled my finger out yet to swap the bumper. I still get the long tone to indicate a fault.

Best to get a scan done.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom, on Monday I look after a VCDS man around and come back with the results.

Hi George,

Hopefully you get this sorted soonest.

Not getting any sound could be one of three things from my very limited experience.

1. The sounder unit/speaker is faulty and this will come up on a scan

2. The control module has a fault which should come up on a scan. It might. It though as it may have stopped communicating due to an internal fault

3. The harness might be at fault and depending which wire(s) is/are at fault you might not get any reading from the scan. If you don’t get any response from the PDC control module then this could mean a break in one of the CAN wires.

Worst case could be a combination of 2 and 3. Fingers crossed that something shows up when you get your A2 scanned next week.

Someone like Tom @timmus will certainly be able to offer assistance once you post your scan results. He will probably have replacement items ready to send to you.

Kind regards,

Tom

Morning,

Today we gonna have the answer, one of the A2 guys from the Fb community here come over today and read my car.
I come back with the news as soon as we're done.

Hello guys,

The situation is the next.
We scan the car with VCDS (20.4.2. version).
The car has 13 fault code, none is regarding to the PDC, here is the log file (.txt).
(btw, I open a new thread with all the other fault code because I don't really understand them... https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/today-vcds-results-need-some-help.45976/)

As we got to the PDC in the VCDS, no fault code again. We checked everything we could. The system was able make the speaker work. It saw the sensors, but as you see on the pics the sensors see 255cm distance all the time, even when I put my hand to the sensors. I tried many times, all sensors, nothing happened.

So here we are now. Speaker ok, the sensors seem to be live, but not working.
I'm pretty sure that it's no coincidence that this fault came now, after the battery was disconnected.

thanks
George

Dear Tom,

Sorry to forget this fact, yes they does.
One more thing I forgot: VCDS shows low accu voltage, it was 10,7V. Last time when I visitid a workshop they advised to change the accu but there is no problem with it, I mean it turns the engine happily, evetything is perfect. In Feb. the car stood on the street for 2 weeks in subzero weather and after started perfectly, turned the engine normally, gauge lights did not fade at all.

cheers
George

Dear mates, dear @timmus ,

I have big news, but no solution yet. We run one more round with VCDS, turned out that the system sense a trailer towed (my car is equipped with towbar from the factory). It's very logic to turn off the PDC when towing. This way understandable the fact that there is no fault code from the PDC!

So the new question is: why the car get a false sign from the towbar connector (or whatever) about something is being towed?
The towbar has never been used by me. The only extra thing happened to the car prior this is battery disconnection.

Dear forum members,

Does anybody have any idea about this problem? Any experience on this towbar-PDC problem? As it happened after the upholsterer disconnected the battery I don't think this is an independent problem which has built up right at the same time.

Thanks mates!
George

Dear mates, problem solved, I hope it can make your life simpler if you hit this problem.
There is a small microswitch in the electric socket of the towbar. When you plug in the trailer's electric plug, this switches off the PDC system. This microswitch failed.
First I was told I needed to change the whole socket.
It was hard to remove because the console of this socket is made of steel, I had to drill out one of the three bolts. Then I pulled out the microswitch which can easily be replaced! I bought one in Conrad for about 2 euros (you only need to get rid of the steel arm of the switch), changed and bolt back the socket with the new bolts I purchased.
It works again, I'm happy. :)20220215_172237.jpg20220218_081042.jpg20220218_081108.jpg20220223_203740.jpg20220223_220249.jpg
