passenger door movement

hi just a quick question, the passenger door has a slight up and down movement so every time we open and close the door the bottom front corner is rubbing on the black plastic sill trim,
any ideas how we can adjust the door to prevent it making a hole in the trim:confused:

the hinge bolts seem tight the movement is coming from the metal bar that attaches the hinge to the door itself

I've seen this on a car I was thinking of buying... and it's also on the lower hinge. I thought it may be the infamous "Door Cracking" issue, but I believe that's only related to the top hinge.

Any ideas? I'd hate to buy this car, and then end up with a huge repair bill straight away.

Not sure how the lower hinge is fitted but the pin could have worn and so giving the movment, so it may be worth taking it to a bodyshop for them to have a look

Cheers Phil

Hi Phil, thanks for chiming in.

On the car I looked at, and it fits the same description as the original post, the hinge was bolted securely to the chassis, and the pin and actual hinge had no movement whatsoever.

The movement was from the part that sticks out of the door (see red arrow above), and is somehow mysteriously attached inside. It's either a bolt that can be tightened (or maybe not, depends on how they made it), or it's glued... sorry, Audi don't use glue... "bonded" to the door.

If it's a simple fix, then I'm keen on this car... but if it's expensive or impossible without a new door then I'll walk away. Has anyone seen this before on the lower hinges of the front door?

Another symptom is that the door strap doesn't appear to work well. It works, kind-of, but doesn't really hold the door in any of the set positions. The slightest bump and it will close/open.

The bottom hinge plate which holds the door to the body is located by 2 bolts. Ref the attached pic, one bolt head is accessed by removal of the interior trim panel and the other , from behind the wing (wing may need to come off)
These bolts are in line with the earth connection (2 brown wires) in the bottom right of the picture. The door check strap is directly above.

Interesting!!!

I've looked up the lower hinge part and the design used on all A2s ever made was replaced in 2008 with a new design!

Also, the repair kits for doing the warranty repair work for the dor cracking issue includes a re-inforcement piece for the lower hinge, as well as the upper parts, so I'd say that this is a known issue and you should speak to a dealer.

Ask them to inspect the problem and tell them that you know there's a repair kit available (8Z0 898 021 and 022) which includes parts to solve the problem.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Spike/Mike,

Thanks for the input.

Steve - The hinge problem I've got (and I think the original poster) is for the part inside the door, not the part that bolts to the chassis... but it's always nice to have pictures of what's underneath. Looks like you were deep into the beast at that point... I hope it all turned out OK?

Mike - I presume that those part numbers are for inside the door? If it was my car I'd break out the tools and have a look to find what's wrong, but that's a hard sell when the owner is standing there.)

Well, the repair kit I listed comes in at around £25 per side, so it may be a cheap fix if you're handy with the spanners and not a deal breaking issue.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike. I'll call my local Audi dealer tomorrow, and call the owner to book another test-drive. I'm sure looking forward to joining the A2 community... even though they are a little "quirky". Maybe I shouldn't get the BrokenSky roof after all... :)

hi peeps, yeh it's the metal thingy that goes into the door that's loose i think i will have to get the door card off and take a peek inside, it must be torx bolted from inside the door somewhere:confused:

It could be the mounting on the door and not the metal bar. I found out my lower hinge was not tight on the driver side door. Upon close inspection, the screws inside the door were not totally tight. It was either a T40 or T45 (cannot remember) bit that you need, ideally on a short 90 degree driver shaft to tighten it. But a short driver might also do the job. You need to give it a few go, ideally with someone else holding the door as you need to tighten it with the door hung at a correct position.

As for the door check strap, it is a £15 part which can be easily replaced.

Hi humps, thanks for the insight. I had hoped that the hinge was bolted inside the door somehow, and not glued/welded... but you can't take that for granted. Did you happen to take any photos when it was apart?

Sounds like an easy fix, and I'll put a new door strap and the hinge upgrade kit whilst I'm in there. Is there a thread somewhere to post photos of jobs like this?

We took the car to a main dealer today and showed him the door, he is going to try and get it fixed under the faults warranty from Audi Uk if its on their records. I asked him what it could be, he replied there is a steel plate inside the door with torx bolts and an aluminium hinge bracket the bolts hold it all together now over time the aluminium hinge bracket sometimes splits and cracks as the aluminium is softer than steel and the constant movement of the door and the stress on the hinge it causes it to crack if that makes sense, he knew what he was talking about anyway will find out next wednesday.:(

Hi krailton. Nice! That's good news, as at least it sounds like it's got a simple solution. Mine is undoubtedly the same, so thanks for posting this thread just when I needed it!

There are some 'how to' guides on front and rear door repairs here - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=49
If you plan to do a similar guide on the hinge repair then post it in the same section.

Cheers Spike
