passenger door only opening half way!

hi guys,

the passenger door on my sisters car (my first a2) only opens half way! i had a little look and can see the door is scrapping the bottom of the sill slightly but is most likely jammed or stuck inside. not sure exactly what is causing this but due to weather i cant strip the door down to have a better look.

any ideas what this could be? i tried googling but nothing has shown any similar problems :/

cheers

Sounds exactly like what I had and it was the door check strap. @depronman sold me one that he makes that are made from better materials than the OEM.

Yes it may be the checkstrap but that would not makle it scrape the sill.

So you might have TWO he bolts loose on the hinges.

Open the door and stand in the gap between the car and the door.

reach over the door and hold the outside door handle.

Try and lift the door upwards via the handle and see if it feels loose. Lift and lower it a couple of times to see if there is any play in the hinges.

If there is play and if the door lifts any more than a fraction of an inch it could be due to the two torx bolts on the hinges becoming loose
If they are loose, lift the door slightly as above and tighten the bolts (or get someone else to lift while you tighten.

But it does sound like you have a failed checkstrap too, that probably explains why the door wont open fully.

I agree with Steve B I think you have two problems here
It is most likely loose door hinge screws but it could also be a worn or completely failed hinge pin in which case a second hand hinge would make the most sense
I can provide a check strap if needed as I have one in stock atm

Thanks for replies guys I'm going to strip the door down today and see what it is.....I've had my fair share of door stripdowns thanks to Paul's advice last year on microswitches ;) will report back later and let you know Paul if I need it, no doubt I will :)
