Picking up the A2 tomorrow

Hello all :)

I'll be collecting my 2004 1.4 TDI tomorrow from a London Audi garage. Test drove it on Tuesday and had to buy it. I've driven a number of different cars over the last few months whilst trying to find something suitable for me, my wife and our baby. I have to say that the A2 is easily the best looking/drive/quality out of all the other cars in this market.

I've got a couple of questions for you A2 experts, any answers would be appreciated.

- I read in another post that one of the ways to spot a 90PS TDI A2 is the red "I" on the badge. Is this always the case as my A2 is a 90PS (so they've said) and it doesn't have it??

- Does anyone have a roofbox fitted and if so can anyone recommend a decent one.

Cheers,
Gavin

Hi and welcome to the A2OC.
Roof box, yes I have used both a bog standard Halfords one and a Thule Ocean 100 model, the Thule is far quieter in my opinion, you have to be carefull on the length of box you get, 1500mm rings a bell, any longer and it will be hit by the tailgate when opened and will have to be positioned too far forward to be balanced, Also get a set of Thule bars and feet, that way when you change car you only need new feet not the whole lot like I did when I got the A4, by the way the A2 holds more than an A4 avant as I have found out.
You'll enjoy A2 ownership, changed mine, now thinking of getting one for the Wifey.

Cheers, Mike

Hi you will fall in love with your new car!

Maybe we'll see you come along to one of the socials. Talking about audi I noticed there was 3 was for sale in portsmouth audi the other day, placed right at the entrance where you walk in not hidden! I thought to have so many was very unusual maybe they are taking a liking to them now.

Thanks for the replies and the welcome :)

I'll look into the roof boxes, thanks for the info. I've owned 2 A4s in the past and was always surprised at how small they were, I was amazed at the room in the back seats in the A2 compared to the A4.

Still not sure about whether or not it's a 90PS car  will find out tomorrow!

Really looking forward to picking the car up now :) It's going to be used as an everyday car with monthly runs along the M4 and M1 - that's why I opted for the diesel, tested a 1.4 petrol and thought it was great in town but suffered when you get on the motorway.

Has anyone been into Europe in their A2? We took our A4 on a 1700 mile round trip to Germany to visit family and it was faultless. I'm hoping the A2 will also be up to the job.

Cheers,
Gavin

I know of one A2 owner in North Wales who has two A2s - 1 in Conwy and another in Austria, where he has a villa.

He does the trip a couple of times a year, non-stop!!!!

You will not be disappointed with the car, and the moterway miles will definately do it justace

Hi Gavin - congratulations!

I take it you are buying the '53 plate from Finchley Road Audi as it doesn't have the red 'I' on the back despite being advertised as a 90. It's impossible to see from the angle the pictures are taken from if it has rear discs or not but this is the easiest way to tell.

I'd get a print-out of the ad done before picking the car up, and make sure it has the rear discs; if not, it's time to dump a whole pile of whupp-ass!

Yes that is the car, not exactly loaded with options and it sounds like a small tractor but I had to buy it after driving it.

Thanks for the advice, printing the page is a great idea, if it's not a 90 I'm sure there would be a huge discount if I started using phrases like "trading standards" and "false advertising" ;)

I used a well known insurance search engine earlier and it identified the car as an A2 TDI (90) after putting in the reg so I'm hopeful that it is right. It could be missing for a number of reasons I suppose, de-badged when new then wrong badge put on, maybe the first TDI 90s didn't have the red badge, who knows? (probably the wrong place to use that rhetorical question as one of you probably will know :))

I'll take the car even if it's not the 90PS model as I was very happy with the test drive, plenty of acceleration for darting around :D

Thanks again to everyone.

Gavin

Don't put any faith in what a search engine reveals - even the DVLA have got the cubic capacity of most diesel A2s wrong, being listed as 1390cc as opposed to 1422cc (mine is one of them and I've told the DVLA who don't want to change!).

The data is only as good as supplied by Audi.

Just out of interest, PM me the VIN number and I'll see what I can gather, info wise.

As for the badging, it is a very slim possibility that the car was de-badged and then re-badged at some point, incorrectly. I;ve never heard of a dealer doing it though and the red 'i' was and is still avalable.

Cheers,

Mike

Picked up the car this afternoon and happy to say that it's everything I hoped it would be and more. I'd pretty much resigned myself to having to buy a new pram after taking the measurements in when i looked at the A2. Amazingly when I got the car back I tried the pram just to check and it went in :) The A2 really is a tardis.

The car turned out to be a TDI 75 although Audi were marketing it as a 90. The junior guy responsible for adding data to the site was given a telling off whilst I was there and they knocked more money off the already discounted price. I ended up paying a considerable amount less than they advertised it for :)

Cheers,
Gavin

Congratulations on your new car. I recommend coming along to the Audi gathering at Castle Coombe on October 13th to meet all the A2 gang. Whereabouts are you in Surrey?
