Hi all, when driving sometimes I get a Pinging and scraping noise going over speed bumps any idea what it could be? and if I can fix and do this myself?
Thank you

I had an intermittent horrible scraping noise coming from the left front wheel for a while, speed dependent, got worse when turning left, but usually started after going over a bump. Eventually realised it was the pressed metal shield that sits behind the brake disc that had corroded away from its bolts and was floating between the brake disk and the hub, sometimes making contact with the rim - was able to jack the corner up with the wheel removed and take it out.

As Darren said, pings are often indicative of broken springs. Scraping - but in your case coming from both front wheels - again as Darren said, undertray, or possibly the plastic inner wheel arches if these are coming adrift (as these are continuous with the sides of the undertray) - if it is these, a pack of plastic push-rivets re-attaching these to the various mounting points inside the wheel arch and some cable ties could be a simple solution. Main thing is take a wheel off with the car safely jacked / supported and have a look at the hub and inside the wheel arch and see if anything (trim, brake shield etc.) is obviously loose and whether you can see the top of the spring on each side. Getting the inner arches and undertray properly located when rebuilding takes a bit of fiddling and not all people working under there take as much time and care as is necessary sometimes.

okay thank you. Another strange point is it only seems to happen in the winter and not the summer but even still not happen all the time. Ive taken it to my local audi garage and they couldnt find anything so really strange.

Anti-roll bar maybe? I get the scraping type noise when I go over a hump back bridge first time in the morning.

worn ARB bushes and drop links (two sides of the same coin) would result in a pronounced sharp knock / clunk when you go over potholes or manhole covers and rattling on corrugated road imperfections. Worn top strut bearings are manifested as creaking and sporadic clunks and / or boings just the other side of the bulkhead when turning steering wheel stationary or at very low speed as the spring is forced to rotate with the strut but the top end doesn't.

Do you have separate winter and summer wheels / tyres? Regarding your issue of seasonality was just wondering if these were different as it may cause something different to foul or otherwise when the suspension is compressed (on speed bump). You've said that the issue is intermittent and happens under specific dynamic conditions when in motion, so it's not surprising that the mechanics haven't been able to trace it without spending probably a fair amount of time with the car which would no-doubt need you to have very deep pockets at Audi's hourly prices.

If you are able to take a few properly-illuminated photos of both wheel arches with the wheels removed that may give us some insights.
