Pipewerx Non-resonated Exhaust

Today saw possibly the last modification to Tank - the fitting of a fully stainless, 2.5 inch full flow non-resonated exhaust, hand built and custom designed especially for the car by Ian at his Merseyside workshop (or should that be werkshop!).

As you can see from the attached photos, he has cleverly mounted the muffler within the central tunnel, leaving the large space occupied by the standard (and Milltek) backbox clear for something else, should the opportunity arise.

I'm sure you'll agree, the new pipe looks the part and I can also report that it sounds the part too, with a lovely low fruity rumble, which builds as you accelerate, but is pretty inaudible when you're cruising.

As I left the motorway on the way back home, I pulled up alongside an R32 (Mk.4) and he was surprised that I kept up with him (actually left him at the first roundabout!) and that my little A2 sounded better than his V6!!!

Those attending the Curry Social will be able to sample the sound first hand.

Now the polishing of the Milltek starts for Alan (B or M?).

Cheers,

Mike

A very nice looking piece of craftsmanship you have there Mike - shame it is hidden away after all the time and effort to produce it. Still, at least you will be able to fully appreciate it when you are out polishing it every other weekend eh...!? ;)

Looking forward to seeing/hearing it on Sunday when you give 'Tank' the berries.

Shame that money is tight right now or Alan 'B' or Alan 'M' would have had some serious competition for the Milltek.

Enjoy.

Yes, it is nice and a shame to hide it away.

I say that this might be the last work on Tank, as I've been reading horror stories on Club Lupo about a 142PS tuned 1.4TDI which went bang!

The only other mods I was considering were a gearbox change and possibly a big brake upgrade (not too fussed about the intercooler now after Shezlees figures, although if Tanks goes AWOL, then I'll get an uprated one fitted).

I don't think forced air induction would be that beneficial either - we're only trying to fill a 3-pot after all, not a 3-litre!!

I do have a couple of electrical jobs awaiting completion though;)

Cheers,

Mike

Oooooooooo Mike now thats just naughty looking! ;):) Lovely piece of kit mate a throughly stunning bit of pipework...give me a shout if either of the two Alans don't take your Milltek ;).

Given your previous comments regarding your power output and the technical tolerances of the standard box; a new six speed capable of offering you a greater 'margin of error - i.e. additional increase' would no doubt prove to be a sound investment. It would probably increase overall fuel consumption too and possibly improve in gear acceleration depending upon the ratios of course. An expensive modification, but if any A2 deserves a six speed box, then clearly it is 'Tank'.

Electrical jobs... mmm... more questions and answers for Sunday...;)

Hey there Mike

How much did this cost? And is it possible for Ian to make more custom exhaust for the a2oc members?

Thanks in advance.

a2sport,

If anyone is interested, see www.pipewerx.com for more details. This system was £587.50 from the manifold to the outlet, but that obviously includes the de-cat work too.

Cheers,

Mike

Ouchh!!!!!

Lovely piece of engineering
Well out of my price range
i wonder if group discount/purchase
would be a possibility ...For people
if interested ...... :)

I'll ask the question, but I can't see how a group buy would work in this case as each system is made bespoke for each car - we're talking tolerances of 10mm fitting the muffler in the tunnel and I doubt a batch (if made up, say a dozen or so) would fit onto the cars without modification.

Yes, it is expensive, but it's something that will last the lifetime of the car and so viewed as a long term buy, it is actually pretty good value - you'd spend that on 2 sets of tyres, which could be done in as little as 40k miles.

Cheers,

Mike

I Know the pipewerx is definatly a work of art and you can see that a lot of work has gone into it as you point out its going to last a lifetime which in its self represents good value ...

Just thinking along the lines of when i was contacting partners in the A20C a couple of years ago to see if they still wanted to be our partners , i contacted AMD Tecnik who flatly denied us an overall discount but they where more than interested when i mentioned a group discount/purchase and wanted us to go there for a rolling road day ....To see what mods where available for the A2 .....This included the Milltek Zorst ....so im sure if enough people came forward Pipewerx may be a slight bit interested ...although i think we would probably struggle to get the necessary numbers interested LOL !!!! :)

Hi,

I`ve just had a new purpose made stainless exhaust system fitted. The cost was £299 including removing the original cat, welding on an extension to it (in case it`s needed in the future) and fitting a cat bypass tube.

The fitter cut the original downpipe, just forward of the flexible section and welded in a new bit of flexi pipe (the original was blowing) and then installed a new exhaust from there back.

So far so good; the car revs more freely and right up to the stop on the rev counter, if you`re not careful.
The engine seems to accelerate more readily.

The downside is the noise. The fruity exhaust note is very obvious all the way through the rev range and seems much noisier than before when the car is cruising.
This is a great disappointment as it ruins what, for me, was one of the best things about the car- an ability to cruise quietly and smoothly at high speed on lengthy journeys.

It looks like I`ll be back to the exhaust shop very soon to see if we can improve things. One possibility is fitting a second silencer downstream from the first.

The moral of the story is: If you enjoy your peace and quiet be careful about modifying the exhaust

more questions for silver

Hi Silver what model A2 have you got ?
How receptive were they to your comments ? are they doing anything to help resolve your issue ? as Emm asks who are they ?
After markets are so difficult to get (especially for petrol A2's)
I do not think anybody has done a stock exhaust upgrade for a petrol A2 :(

Duplex tail ... very nice

Thanks,
Very nice tail :D

558E is quite dear bearing in mind shipping and then fitting but worthy of a long ponder

Apologies for my ignorance, if this is just a tail section will this offer any performance enhancement or just better audio whilst driving ?

Just trying to get a full picture before making any decisions

Well, BN-Pipes is a highly regarded exhaust maker over here – known for special custom solutions as well. Their quality level should be comparable to Milltek or Pipewerx for example.

As you can see it is a fully stainless backbox system, however the sound of a BN-pipes equipped 1.6 FSI is already quite agressive. Both the tubing diameter of 2 x 52 mm and those internals of the box reduce counterpressure meaning better performance and more sporty throttle response.

In all cases (1.4, 1.6 and the Diesels) the bottom of the rear plastic skirt has to be adopted slightly to fit both tailpipes. Several BN-pipe users have had realigned (cut and re-welded) the last section of the tubing to integrate about 50% of the tailpipe section within the rear bumper for better looks.

Regards
