Poor idle

When stationary and engine idling, after 2 minutes the engine drops to 3 cyl. The only way to continue is to switch engine off for 2 minutes or so,then fault cleared.

Always a good idea to start the opening post of a thread by stating engine code. As you say it drops to 3 cylinders after two minutes that rules out diesels, any more clues.

Sorry for the humour but it does get tedious digging out the forum registration details.

From OP's profile, a BBY.
Sounds like the ECU is switching the injector off after a number of mis-fires in that cylinder to protect the cat.
@Bargepower wasn't that what your Island Green BBY used to do?

I bought my BBY 1.4 at 96 000 miles and had two coilpack failures within 1000 miles. 8000 miles covered since with no further failures. The first one was misfiring intermittently (on/off would clear it or revving the engine) and then it gave up completely. The second one gave up after a 300 mile trip. I parked at my destination and on next start it was on 3 cylinders. I now carry two and of course I haven't needed them!

I had a diagnosis device which told me which one was gone and was also able to clear faults to get rid of the engine light (which flashes). I bought an extractor but I think they can be levered out with screwdriver. The connectors are a bit of a chore though but I changed mine myself.
