Poor intermittent starting

Hi All

Just thought I would share

When I first got the car about 3 years ago on the odd occasion, when starting her up on a morning if it never caught on the first turn of the key, I would have to crank it for about 10 seconds before it would fire up. This occurred mainly in the summer no real problem in the winter.

A couple of months back I went visit my folks down south and I reversed parked on the drive which is a slope of about 1 in 3. When I tried to start her up it cranked for ages before firing up. The next day I parked forwards and it started first time this was after leaving it over night, I alternated this over a few nights and exactly the same thing. On returning home the starting issue progressively got worse.

My thoughts was fuel leak or fuel draining back into the tank or air getting in the system somewhere, so I checked all the fuel lines and could not see any wet patches anywhere and it was not giving any error codes. I had read on a few threads about poor starting could be the camshaft sensor(G40) but I could not understand why this should be affected by parking on an incline. Anyway I changed it and it has started first time since and seems to perform a little better.

A quick how to guide -

Remove the engine cover
undo both clips on the cambelt cover the back one you have to feel for.
The belt hides the sensor but you can see its location on the picture there's only one 10mm bolt holding it in
undo the connector which is located just behind the oil filter housing
when replacing its a little fiddly to get back in place, its important to make sure the locating peg on the back of the sensor fits in the locating hole before nipping back up.

Its an easy job, it might be worth stuffing rags in the bottom cambelt cover just in case you drop the bolt .
The one I got was made by BERU and Cost £47 from ECP you can get cheaper ones but was the OEM, Im not sure how much from Audi.

Hope this helps if anyone has the same problem
