Poor performance 1st and 2nd gear ATL/TDI 90 below 2000rpm.

Thanx for all your advice guys!

Ofcourse it's obvious to use locking equipment when changing a timing belt.....
When I say "checked and altered" with VCDS (Big Thanx @DuncanA2 again!) , I was pointing at "torsion values", which as you all know (off course!) can be set with the slots on the gear wheel connected to the camshaft.

Apparently a remap is required to get rid of this problem........ Which is in my head!
Appointment is set, friday it will get a remap.

Yes remap....... 1,2,3......NOT!

Some info.
Apparantly an owner before me installed an ATL engine with less mileage in the A2.
When he connected up the electronics and ECU (which was not changed and bone stock), he was encountered with a rough idling engine, like it was missing a beat.
Luckily he had the spare ECU, belonging to the engine, and the dashboard/cluster.
So he swapped those too, and now the engine was running fine!
Above mentioned I found out Googling the former owners name and lead me to the Dutch A2 forum.

Now, ofcourse I was not aware all of above mentioned when I was at the remap headquarters.
Luckily my software was kept save when uploading the remap.
After this the engine was running idle like it was missing a beat. Gave it light throttle and it was running fine.
I took the liberty for a test drive, wanted to know how it reacted. Well, it was pulling earlier and more punchy, just like it should.
When I came back idling was also fine...... Until I switched of ignition and restarted again; instantly idling rough, missing one cilinder.

The engineer never experienced thus before.
The remap was removed and my old file was put back. Ofcourse it was running sweet again.
So decided to put on the renap again, but unfortunately rough idling cane back too.
Then we replaced the complete ECU with a bog standard original ATL ECU which had the key protection removed.
Again no sigar, rough running.....

I wonder now what's going on, which part is not 100% and did someone altered the software to cover up a faulty item.
I made (eh, busy with) an appointment with an automotive guy who's specialized in software "problems" and we'll see if he can expose the problem.

To be continued.

Cheers.

1 step forward, 2 steps back........ It's a little bit of dancing back and forth with this ATL.

Apparently someone took the liberty of fitting non ATL injectors to this particular car. Why beats me, maybe a cheap way of getting things going.
Whatever, I have some originals now, and also wanted an original ECU. Still got one here so all it required was getting the immobilizer set to off so I could test some.
When I got home from the ECU guy who took the immobilizer off I thought of test it a little bit with the incorrect injectors still installed.
All went fine, except for missing a beat idling, as expected.

Then I looked at the ECU wiring loom and thought why it had a big lump underneath the isolation (non original....) wrap.....
Took it off to reveal more butchering.

Please, if you do not understand wiring, keep away from them, pretty please!
I know I'm no natural to wiring, but connection like this would shame myself...... And at an ECU wiring loom!
I was not amused, closed up and went for the 5 o'clock alcoholic pleasures..... A little bit earlier ?.
One ATL that's been abused and butchered, apparently for reason which can only be a cheap financial fix.

I'll get it sorted some day soon.... I hope!

My mums A2 had the ABS pump and all that gubbins removed, properly, car was not aware it is missing anything, no faults logged, no warning lights, just ABS pump missing.

It always amazes me when I see something like above, cause it implies fairly in depth knowledge of the workings of the vehicle electronics and mechanics as well as access and understanding of the schematics etc. which is then used to make a bodge that makes no sense just to save a few quid, rather than improve it or make it better.

Like a really bad Super Villain.

So, I wassa notta crazy! The ATL is driving again like an ATL should!

The wire repair was done because of a damaged wire apparently (crank sensor wiring). A shame the repair was done without the use of crimpsleeve and original isolation tape.

The problem was that someone castrated this ATL with AMF injectors and a "hybride" mapping on the ECU.
All is restored now with the use of original ATL injectors and ECU, which still had a @timmus remap.

Pictures; 1 in Progress, 2 AMF injectors which are not even a matched set, 3 original ATL Injectors with new seals etc.

Great tenacity! You must feel like you know the car inside out now. Inspiring to not give up and that anything can be fixed eventually. Enjoyed following this thread.

can only imagine the amount of time spent trying to make the wrong injectors and slap together loom work... spend a week to save a few hundred quid on injectors? Makes my misadventures seem mild!

The rough idle you described probably started because when the engine was changed they probably put the engine in as it came and didn't put the cars origional injectors into the replacement engine, have seen this many times with PDs, on my own Passat I changed the head (it came complete with injectors) and as soon as the engine warmed up it sounded like it was misfiring at idle but as you said as soon as you touched the accelerator pedal it smoothed out, I advanced the cam timing and that helped but once I fitted the cars origional injectors all was fine again, it has something to do with imbalance in the injectors and the ecu being matched with the origional injectors,

Yes, it's possible to get the engine running fine with other injectors, but it's required to adjusr/alter BIP or SOI mapping.
If one is interested; On www.ecuconnections.com there's a lot of info to be found.

In my case a complete(!) file of an AMF was written over the original....... It not only affected idling was perfect now, it also messed up turbo pressure chart for a VTG turbo, did not "see" electronic devices such as ASV or different set up of glow system, yet, when driving and monitoring requested and giving parameters where within limits........

Anyhow, after a couple of days driving now I'm so happy as a puppy again!
The PTW 6 speeder is completing the ATL perfect. Even in 6 at 100-110km/hr it's got grunt to go forward smooth if desired.
