pop-out ash tray in dash - Removal and refitting

The pop-out ash tray (in front of the gear stick) in my A2 was broken when I viewed the car at the dealer a couple of weeks ago. It seems the spring mechanism is broken as you can pull it out but the press-release does not work.

The dealer has said they will fit a new one while I wait but its an hour's drive each way and they dont open on saturdays.

So, I'm thinking about asking them to just give me the parts and I'll do it myself.

But before I do that, is it a reasonably simple task?

two torx (T25?) screws to undo after you've pop the tray out, nothing too complicated if i remember correctly.

ashtray

Hi, my A2 has the same problem with the ashtray, but I turned it into an advantage. Since it 's harder to open in that semi broken state, I glued a nice piece of hardwood on it
as a grip. The advantage is that while opened it stays put
where you leave it quit firm. This gave me the idea to use it as
a sort of clamp for my Garmin satnav. If I push back the ashtray with the satnav resting on it, it sits so tight between the ashtray and the underside of the climatecontrol unit that it will not move whatsoever! Looks a bit double DIN ish:) I thought I was being quit smart!
Cheers, Gumbold
