power steering leak now

guys ive got pas fluid leaking from the drivers side steering rack gaiter, its coming from this area only and dribbled down on to the front wishbone, pas reservoir is down to almost no fluid in it, the pas pipes on the rack are dry, how does the fluid leak out of the gaiter, cheers

Hi

Quick list

1.Brake cleaner the whole area and wipe up the mess monitor the flow in the area for a couple of days.
2.Top up the reservoir behind passenger light.
3.Remove headlight with the 2 Torx screws.

Good luck!

If it looks like its leaking from the gaiter then it's likely the piston seal behind said gaiter. I know the racks are refurbishable off the car but I'm not sure if it can be done insitu. I'm sure someone here will come along with experience. Either way it's a headache you can do without. I have a rack with a similar leak so will be watching this thread with interest.

Thanks for the photo, its great to see what your seeing at your end.
Edit
In post number 3 in this thread you mentioned that oil leak but thought it could be brake fluid.
😞

yeah i thought it leaked onto the steering rack gaiter, but its leaking out of the gaiter, i thought the servo was leaking as my brakes are rock hard and no assistance, so i need to solve the servo problem as well.

Chin up. You've got this.
Mechanical problems...
One down....
Two to go..!

Bring it on!

Edit...
Oh nearly forgot to say

Good luck!

hi,
Thinking if it was my car ...what would I do next?

You know how I work by now.

I'm going to look for the exploded diagram and at workshop manual.

I'll report back with my findings......

:) 👍

Hi,
I have gathered a few bits of info.

This is from the Self Study Guide 240 - Technology - Design and Function 240 pages 20 to 24.

What I liked about this picture is the message in the TEXT BOX saying the left and right function of the steering is similar to familiar power steering set up.
Pistons and hydraulics, easy stuff....getting into the power steering unit to replace them and finding the right seals another question!

Had a look at 7ZAP to see if the power steering units have hydraulic system o-rings, back up rings and wiper seals listed.
Nothing.

You can probably see where this is going....its one of two things I can think of at this point.

Drain all the fluid out the system buy some power steering stop leak and green power steering fluid. Refill the system and hope for the best.

The alternative is to break out the workshop manual and have a look how to remove and replace the rack (you probably have done this already)

But for others who may have the same issues, see diagram below.

I would contact the A2 breakers to see if they have a rack in stock..

Hope this is of some use?:)👍

EDIT.

Best of luck

yeah thats a good start, ive bought a bottle of lucas stop leak already, gets here tomorrow, got some fluid turning up so gonna try the stop leak first as even only a temporary measure it means i can get it to the mot station and it needs to go on diagnostic as well, then see about another rack later, cheers
