Preferred steering wheel, 3 or 4 spoke ?

I've got the 3-spoke steering wheel in my car and I much prefer it. I've driven countless A2s with both designs and I find the 3-spoke design both more aesthetically pleasing and much more comfortable. I find the gaps between the spokes of the 4-spoke wheel too small and I prefer the extra girth of the 3-spoke wheel. I also like the fact that the 3-spoke design isn't perfectly round; it has subtle moulding to support your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions.
As others have said, Audi only made a MFSW in the 4-spoke design, though I've since devised a way of making a 3-spoke MFSW, albeit with only 4 buttons rather than 6.

My sister refers to the 4-spoke wheel as 'the granddad design'. Whilst I wouldn't wish to be too disparaging about something that others clearly like, I can see where she's coming from. When she bought her Sprint Blue Colour Storm, the steering wheel was the first thing she asked me to change.

Cheers,

Tom

Search Royal Steering Wheels Aylesbury ... approx £150

How long after filling in their online order form for a quote was it before they got back to you with a price? I've assumed they have my request but as it's a online form I have nothing to show they received it? I thought maybe a email perhaps to say they are arranging a quote but nothing since sending details and 2 photos? Thanks

Well I now have my 3 spoke wheel ready for recovering. Quick question! How do you release the central yellow airbag connection as the plug has a broken bit on it? So I can use my existing wiring connector on my car when I replace my 4 spoke wheel and airbag. I was reluctant to start tugging at this without some idea how it comes off:confused:

I have the 4 spoke in both A2s and a 3-spoke GTI in the VW Touran. For comfort I prefer the 4 spoke anyday since I normally have only one hand on the wheel in the bottom middlepart while driving. With 3 spoke I can not have my hand in the bottom part in a comfortable way.

But the 4 spoke looks buttugly for sure.

I like the four spoke. I like that I can lazily hang my hand in the middle or in any number of lazy places. I think it also looks nice and square like some of the fancy cars of yesteryear.

That said I’ve driven a three spoke with the knurled edges at 10 and 2 and it was lovely to feel your hands belong in their rightful place.

I might buck the trend and try to get a cheap four spoke for some diy recovering. Baseball stitch coming up!

There's probably plenty around :)

Evenings Tom,

Only today I see an Allroad 3 spoke steering wheel with buttons and was hoping that it could be made to work in the A2. This afternoon I see your reply in the Today I thread regards the modification you and Alanb have. Is this something you can offer and if so at what cost. Happy to do figures over PM or WhatsApp. I don’t have the Allroad Tiptronic wheel yet but not a difficult to get item. I was hoping to remove the buttons and ‘make’ them fit into my red sport steering wheel. Thoughts?

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom, unfortunately I believe the AllRoad version is a twin-stage airbag system, so won't work with the single stage airbags of the A2. However, I believe these are available from Mk1 Audi TTs so it might be worth searching one of these out as these are pretty much straight swap for the A2 system, albeit with Timmus' mod for the buttons.

Evening Jeremy,

Isn’t the Allroad (should have specified C5 earlier) 3 spoke tiptronic steering wheel an 8Z0 part number like this:

https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A6-C5...i+allroad++steering+wheel+8z0&_from=R40&rt=nc

It ‘should’ be a straight swap if I were to not use the buttons. That said I could easily be wrong and standby to be corrected by someone who has already tried this.

I would be using my existing red sport steering wheel with the tiptronic buttons inserted into it (once Tom done his magic to the switch internals) from the Allroad steering wheel. It could go horribly wrong whilst making the apertures for said buttons but it’s my only option as I want to keep my red sport steering wheel.

As this is not an essential mod I am being frugal so getting a trimmer to recover an Allroad steering wheel isn’t really an option.

Hopefully I can get the buttons fitted into my steering wheel without too much hassle. I see it as a challenge over a weekend if I can ever find a spare one.

If it’s a completely mad idea, again I standby to be accused of being mad, I will just resort to cranking up the tunes by leaning forward to the volume control on the headunit.

Kind regards,

Tom
