Preparation for the Nurburgring

Does anyone have any tips for preparing my FSi for the Ring.

Not looking at full race prep but reasonable steps to take on some laps.

TIA

Nothing someone of your heritage on A2OC wouldn't know already but I'd be very carefully checking over ALL components in the brakes and suspension - and if less than perfect I'd replace with a quality make. Similarly if you're in anyway unhappy with shocks etc. I'd replace now.

What tyres will you be fitting? Worth thinking about.

Also - don't forget to flush the brake and clutch fluid as really hard use will boil any water in the system! If more than 18 months old I'd flush.

I went on the ring once a while ago in a smart roadster (light car). The brakes overheated after the third corner.

similar to if you were to join us on the ice. Make sure your oil is good, good tyres with correct pressure; brake fluid (probably change and put the system under some pressure first - there's been at least one burst brake pipe), that coolant is good and generally the car is in good mechanical condition. Otherwise you risk spending quite a lot of cash for sitting on the sidelines....

Ensure your brakes/brake pipes are all in good condition.
Coolent also.
Tyres and suspension are a given.
It is a long way, but just treat it as a road and if your vehicle is maintained well, it will be fine. If you have anything less than good condition, change it.
I think any normal person taking an A2 onto the ring should simply treat it as an experience and a tourist lap. When you go around just think of the pre-war racers and what they did and enjoy the experience.

My last experience of the 'green hell' was in an Audi S2 and the clutch gave out after two laps, but was still able to get back home without recovery.

There you go - If you're planning to push the car, I'd consider a Fabia VRS brake upgrade and appropriate pads for a race track.

I admit to not being a racing driver. As such I probably overused the brakes in fear of going too fast round the corners. So top tip.....go faster around the corners!!! that way the brakes are less likely to overheat.
Err I think I'm getting onto dodgy territory and dubious logic here. Gonna stop (if i can) before I get in (to the corner) too deep.

Good shout mate. Esp re the suspension. It’s fine for normal road use but could use something better. Any thoughts on what to change to? I usually go with B4s?

Still keen to get a ring trip organised next June if there is interest? Would love to see us mob the Ring with a massive amount of A2s or just me winding my way through the GT3s etc. make for a great video!

Wide lightweight wheels and good low profile tyres and plenty of high octane fuel! 😂👍

Do the VRS callipers bolt on?

they only bolt on to the hub casting designed for bolt-on carriers ; standard A2 hubs have an inbuilt carrier that limits you to the 256mm front discs we have normally.

VRs / Polo GTI hubs have two threaded holes onto which the (different) carriers for calipers suitable for 288 or 312mm discs (and probably larger) will fit, opening up using the caliper from the VRs (288mm), or MkI Audi TT and various equivalent platform VW / Seat / Skoda models (312mm).

Good shout but based on the power (or lack thereof) will I be using the brakes much!

If your FSI lacks power, are you sure the engine is in good nick?
You had mentioned suspicions recently.
Running a poorly engine at high engine speeds and loads is unwise, doubly so for an FSI.
Mac.

I changed my pads in the Z4 to yellow stuff when I visited earlier this year. I would deffo recommend doing this, if you get a move on your will definitely be needing them!

Oil change if not done in the last few months.
