Problem with rear electric window

Hello good folks of the A2OC would anyone be able to shed any light on a rear window issue on our 2005 tdi, the problem we have is the rear electric window ( drivers side ) will go down on the electric motor but will not go back up ?? only way to return window to closed position is by manually pushing the glass up. drive the car for a couple of hours over speed bumps etc and the glass drops down a few inchs, any help would be really appreciated before i start removing door skins etc.
cheers anthony

Yes, the lifter that is the connection from the cable to the glass has broken out of the top of the plastic attached to the glass.

As the window is driven down the drive portion of the cable is able to push down on the top of the white plastic fitting, driving the window down.

When you try to lift the window, the drive has nothing to act upon and just lifts up on its own. Effectively it's literally like you only being able to touch the top of the window glass with one finger: you can drive it down, but not lift it up.

You'll need a new lifter module (whatever that might be called officially). You don't need to buy the motor, just the mech.

Be aware that as well as stripping out the interior door card, you also have to remove the outer door seal and then the upper door frame. Not as bad as it sounds but mark around the fixing bolts (or puff some spray paint around them where you can). That way, when the frame goes back in it'll go back to its original position. Otherwise you'll have the faff of trying to set all the gaps up again.

Thanks really appreciate the reply and i will hopefully get it repaired ASAP but it is not a job i think i will do as patience and fiddly door internals are not for me. sounds like a repair for mr timmus as lots of you on here recommend his work and not far from me if he can help? will have to wedge glass in place for now until i can get it sorted.

Barry myself and my brother ian met tom yesterday for the first time up at his home at 2.30pm only to have a quick natter (10 mins) we said about cruise/sport wheel and a repair on ians a2 sport wheel bearing, 2 and a bit hrs later we were still there talking all things A2 and enjoyed every minute of toms knowledge ( what a guy ) talk about go the extra mile the world needs more toms nothing we asked or put forward to him got a negative reply only positive responses and that makes such a change when your car needs something done to it. i am starting with cruise/sport steering wheel/rear window repair this weekend and i am now about to trawl ebay etc for other electric goodies for tom to install.

Looks like I may have a similar issue this morning came out and the rear drivers side window was down . The glass pane appears to be able to slide up and down of its own accord when lifted from holding the top of the glass. Assuming it has jumped off the mech or something has broken. Any ideas where I start on this before I start. Dont want to damage the door cards or create a bigger issue . When I try the window switch I can hear a whirr so I presume the mech / motor are working. if I lift the window to close position and then use the button to lower it does go down, just wont come back up.

You literally gotta take the door card off along with the everything that's in the way, and see what's going on underneath.
If you got no garage, like me, than that can be a hassle as it can rain anytime. The issue is probably gonna be the same as mentioned above, but have a look first, with all bits out the way it's much easier to see the broken/missing parts.
Save this link as Surge's how-to's are great and very informative, rather essential. Part 13 is how-to remove door card.

A job for tomorrow ... its in the open air , no garage so hoping it wont rain, until then I hope the duct tape holds the glass in place.

Taken apart and the cable is not attached to the white plastic lifter anymore. Theres a small brass piece that seems to be the lifter just running up and down freely when the motor / cable are actuated . The plastic bits look like they are broken and need Depromans repair kit. I ordered up front and now looking at how I disassemble the white plastic part. Getting the window frame, door and all the bits apart to the point I can diagnose and start any repair has been a bit of a faff. lots of sharp edges inside the door frame too so watch your hands . This task needs patience
