Problem solved, although turns out to not have been a problem in the first place.

After reading through the RNS-E operating manual I come across this image:

Seeing this image showing ‘Telephone Vodafone’, it’s now quite clear to me why mine displays ‘Telephone 3’.

Although I’m happy that I all is in order, I must admit that Post #135 was not one of my finest moments.

Here is the next item (arrived whilst I was typing the above post and was not expecting it so quickly) I’m going to be fitting to my joy of an A2:

This is an Arduino Unit made up by Stuart from the RNSE PCBBC website. It’s job is to act as the missing hardware inside the later RNS-E PU Revisions so it’s able to pick up the speed pulse from the instrument cluster.

This will allow me to have the over speed warnings along with having the RNS-E know exactly where I am should I be travelling for some time in a tunnel or loose GPS visibility for any other reason.

In addition will also allow the RNS-E to know whether reverse is selected or not. At the moment my RNS-E thinks reverse is always engaged which I wanted to overcome should I wish to add a reverse camera sometime in the future.

Not being an expert at all on things like this but I understand that the RNS-E PU 193B Revision does come with the hardware to read the speed pulse signal but (getting a bit out of my depth here but I’ll carry on) if it’s running the PCBBC Firmware then for some reason it cannot read said speed pulse signal. Obviously the easy solution is to roll back the firmware to a factory iteration but then you loose the ability to have Road Speed Limit Icons in the bottom right hand corner of the display along with the other features from the PCBBC firmware.

Rambled on long enough and to be honest I don’t fully understand this area, all I know is it will make my RNS-E PU work the way I want it to. The price for this Arduino unit delivered was £25. Stuart said he can do produce them cheaper if I were to ask for a group/bulk order. My personal thoughts are that a RNS-E PU 193G Revision plus £25 for an Arduino Unit is certainly still much cheaper than what I see the 193B revisions go for (which don’t natively display the Road Speed Limit Icons).

The next unit(s) he manufactures for the A2 will have longer tails to connect into the Quadlock/Harness.

Time to quickly improve my soldering skills and get this fitted, probably over the weekend after I’ve been to Lincolnshire to collect Project 250 from @Nicholas Golland.

Once I have the Arduino Unit fitted I will report my finding on this thread.

If it all works out as planned, which I’m sure it will, I will then start another group order thread to see how many I need to ask Stuart to make.

There will be no minimum or maximum quantity for this order. As I don’t know how many will be requested I cannot put a price on it, it will be either £25 (what I paid) or cheaper if it meets a certain number for purchasing the parts required in bulk. I don’t know what this figure is as I really am just the middle man here.

If you’re not wanting to wait a week you can certainly go direct to Stuart via the contact button on the website.

There will be a slight delay (probably a week) fitting it into my A2 as I have asked Tom @timmus to assist me with reducing some of the bulk behind my RNS-E. Having the ISO to Quadlock adapter, Audi BT Module PnP harness and AMI PnP Harness leaves no room for anything and actually makes pushing the HU home difficult.

Tom will join them all together to keep things safe and tidy. The Arduino Unit harness will also be lengthened and soldered into the Quadlock.

I’m just waiting for the delivery of the AMI harness then it’ll all be in transit to Timmus Towers for a day or 2.

Quite excited to have this all fully working.

Evening all,

This thread has been neglected for a while so I will get some more updates and pictures to you over the course of next week.

The things that have been worked on are are follows:

1. After purchasing the Audi Media Interface (AMI) for further iPhone integration it was apparent that I have run out of room behind the RNS-E with the additional Plug and Play (PnP) harness. Therefore reducing the mass of an ISO to Quadlock connector with 2 PnP harnesses was a must as I just couldn't safely push the RNSE fully home without worry of trapping/squashing anything. The AMI and BT Module leads have now been soldered into one PnP harness and all fits nice and safe whilst being fully sealed with heat shrink and Tesa Loom Tape, my new best friend to hide the safe mess of the loom joining):

This was a job that Tom @timmus had accepted to do for me but I was just too impatient so took the task on myself. Tom thank you very much though, as although Ive done it to a very safe standard, Im sure it would look much tidier if I had sent it all to you.

2. Here is the AMI that I purchased after being tempted by @devans about this retrofit over PM, thank you David for your advice and assistance:

Installation was very simple as it was just a plug and play affair once the RNS-E was correctly coded (just 1 digit to amend). Im yet to have it fully connected to my iPhone XR as I don't yet have the correct AMI iPhone lead, I think I have every possible genuine cable apart from the correct one! It has been tested with an AMI 3.5mm jack with an older iPad though. The sound processing comes out very good and might well be an improvement over the Xcarlink, hard to tell as I've worked in a rather noisy industry for many years thus my hearing isn't what it was some 3+ decades ago. The Xcarlink will be fitted into Project 250 which will have its own thread soon enough.

3. The Arduino unit lead has also been lengthened and joined to the harness. The Unit itself has been fitted underneath the plastic trim part below the ashtray forward of the gear knob, I cut out a rectangular shape from the foam and placed the unit in the cut out for protection. It will probably be moved in time but works there for now. I can report that the Arduino Unit performs perfectly. The result is I now have my RNS-E PU 193 G Revision displaying the speed pulse count and speed in MPH/KPH in the engineering pages as does the more expensive 193B Revision. For me the price totals RNS-E 193G =£240 delivered and Arduino Unit =£25 delivered, this is by far a much cheaper option than the prices Ive seen 193B Revisions sell for. Is the later 193G Revision now a serious contender, in my opinion YES, if you don't mind having the £25 Arduino Unit placed somewhere. You could actually have it completely out of the way in the passenger footwell compartment, where I may eventually place it, I made the lead extension long enough.

As the speed pulses are being received I also get the over speed warning. A little disappointing that it’s just a small grey warning triangle but at the same time really happy that I now have this functionality. I couldn’t have achieved this without the assistance from Stuart (RNSE PCBBC website), who will look at introducing a beep/chime/annoying sound when you do go over the speed limit. This will hopefully be included in a future release of his firmware.

4. Some will remember that I reported great news with the PCBBC FW260 but recently upgraded to FW270. This was due to chatting to Stuart about the REV ON in the engineering pages (the RNS-E thinking that reverse was constantly selected), which would be an issue should I choose to add a rear view camera later. A day or so later he sent me the updated firmware (which is now available on the website). Initially it looked to cure the REV ON as it displayed REV OFF, but I couldn't get it to change to REV ON when reverse was selected. The reason I couldn't get the REV to pick up the fact that reverse was selected was due to it needed to be told via voltage, I therefore armed myself with my portable soldering iron and added a wire from a reverse feed to the ISO harness which now works perfectly.

5. This item arrived during the week which may look like an OSS motor, because it is:

I've been after this specific OSS motor for some time now but didn't know what to look for. When Ian @Bargepower stopped by to deliver a Votex kit many months ago he informed me that the OSS Motor part number that ends in an ‘A’ is the one I was after to have the pause in between tilt and slide. The search started and I was rather chuffed to purchase this not many months later with a 48 hour delivery service all for £15. It was fitted within 10-15 minutes and can report it works exactly as it should, I like the built in pause as it annoys me when I see the wife wearing out the mechanism trying to perfectly get the OSS at just tilt only. Not sure if they actually sell but I've seen these for sale on eBay for nearly treble figures, extortionate!

Im struggling to think of what else to do with this glorious A2, of course the Votex kit and headlamp washer bumper need to be painted and fitted along with CDIS when Tom has the parts available but once that's complete, it will probably be at the end of the upgrades, as anything further will be taking too far away from its name. Although it really is my pride and joy you might find it available in a few months if I find another A2 with potential. Im thinking another TDI 75 but Ebony Black with OSS which Id like it to have the exact same interior as this one. It'll be a difficult decision as its hard to price a modestly kitted A2 with such high mileage, this is not an advert in any way what so ever, just my thoughts.

I am seriously thinking of fitting the A8 D2 forged wheels though as I think they will look amazing on an Azure Blue A2 with Votex!

It’s getting late and I’m not the most technical person so difficult for me to explain what changes have been made.

In short, the newer version of the RNS-E (2012 193G part number) which I have now operates the same, if not better then the preferred RNS-E version (193B part number) in its native form.

I think those wheels would set the car off perfectly. The only problem might be if it ever came up for sale it might prove to hard to resist which could leave me living in a bedsit with 3 A2’s after my wife kicks me out!!! ?

An hour ago I received the Twist Space Floor Box from @johnyfartbox (John yes that was very well packaged up). It looks brand new and just looks right sat next to the Twist Rear Cup Holder:

Evening all,

Earlier today I received another genuine AMI lead after purchasing two incorrect sets. The sets I’ve purchased recently didn’t work as they were for the later revision AMI/MMI modules.

For the 8P0 part numbered AMI there is no such Apple Lightning cable. If only I know that a little earlier.

After chatting with @devans it was apparent that the only way to get a recent iPhone to work was to use a genuine AMI Apple 30 Pin cable with the Blue collar on it along with a genuine Apple 30 Pin to Lightning adapter (thank you David). It all looked to be getting expensive as the The Apple adapter alone is £35.

After further searching I found this listing on eBay:

The seller sent it First Class Recorded and arrive quickly.

I can now report that my iPhone now shows up on the MEDIA Source selection. The tracks streaming from the iPhone also display in the DIS which is a nice added bonus. It also charges the my XR perfectly. It made me a very happy man as I’ve hit a few stumbling blocks recently regards making the RNS-E work the way I want it to.

Pictures of the DIS and RNS-E later as the wife has just taken OEM shopping. I’m not sure she understands what Project 250 was purchased for!

EDIT: Here are a few pictures which has taken this little task to a very satisfactory end, well until I see what David has up his sleeve.

Nice work Tom ?. I couldn’t put up with the non interactive Bluetooth adapter on the RNS-e that came with my unit as a free gift . The AMI makes this makes it a usable system and charges it at the iPhone same time. I’m going to experiment with a Bluetooth adapter on the ami cable

Evening all,

As promised earlier, a few pictures have now been added to post #153.

I really am happy with the way the recent Audi Bluetooth and AMI Module retrofit has gone, its left me with a few genuine AMI leads spare but got them rather cheap so can easily sell on I suppose.

For a few years now I've been using the RNS-E (mainly Mk1) and have never used the MEDIA and TEL buttons, this installation really has changed my admiration for these old Head Units. Utilising the SDS on the CAR button to navigate to the system with my voice is also great, its no Alexa or Siri but I like it with its clunky way. I can always call up either one of the afore mentioned and have the streaming through the AMI anyway.

The next big job is starting shortly, where I hand this terrific A2 over to the hands of Rob and Marcus at WOM for some surgery. It'll be having the gearbox removed which will be swiftly replaced with the recently prepared MYP gearbox. I look forward to the maiden journey home in 6th!

Yesterday I finally found the time to fit my new battery. No real issues with the current one in OEM but thought I’d donate it to Project 250 as it’s still on the factory battery.

This nice new one should do well with OEM being in constant use along with its upgraded 140amp alternator:

I used the link that someone recently posted in another thread to get these for £75.92 with the 20% discount code.

Not noticed anything different as the battery I had already fitted is in good order. It was Project 250 that needed a new battery. Why not put the nice new one in my pride and joy though. It has a lot more fitted to it than the budget spec of the less pampered step child (250).
