Project Papaya (CS)

Brake light switch now changed and everything seems to be normal, although will test this week to be sure. What a sight I must have looked. both drivers side doors open, drivers seat flat back, lying on my back upside down on the seats trying to get into a comfortable position to find and then remove the switch. Didn't help matters by removing the clutch switch first doh! Then found the right switch (looks a completely different type to the one I received from ECP). Initially the switch didn't work but I think that this is because I had pushed it in too far before installation, popped it back out a bit and all was well. Hopefully this will now be fixed for a while, now have some intake cleaner and will move onto that next

Does anyone have any experience with noisy tappets, now that I have another A2 I can really hear the difference between the engines and also the power that the other engine has, although I'm hoping cleaning the intake tract will help with this I want to squash the tappet noise also as it's clearly not the way the engine was intended to run.

Glad the brake switch tip seems to have worked (touching wood)

As for the tappets, if you look at the cost or replacng them (and they are still unlikely to be silent) it is possibly better to leave well enough alone?

I am assuming that when you are sitting in the car with the windows closed that the sound is almost silent?

I had a 1.4 petrol that was a bit rattly but with the doors closed, it was so quiet I genuinely thought that the engine had stalled.

It is quiet but gets quite rattly when on the move esp accelerating Steve, was hoping if I caught up with you all at the weekend I could compare notes with some known-good examples to see where my one was on the spectrum :D next time!

Yes, that is a good move, are you coming to the social in Bracknell in June?

I will try my best, but it is an epic journey - google maps ;)

I'll try my best to get to one of them, they sound great, so much to see and do just need to get the weekend off work

I have the exact same issue. It's most likely the tappets somewhere on my intake side. I'll look into replacing them with tappets from our rescue car Amy, when we have found a cheap replacement engine for her.

Let me know how you fare, my mechanic said 'they all sound like that' but I'm not so sure now. If anyone gets a chance to take a video of theirs at idle and revving under the bonnet I'd appreciate it.

Here is my friends A2 1.4 which definitely has an issue, mine doesn't sound nearly as bad. However after leaving this car for 4 years (yes 4 years) the engine problem appears to have gone and it's quiet again.

Well I hope everyone had a terrific day in the sunshine, 22.5 Deg according to the car.

Today was retrofit day and a quick trip down to Gretna saw me meet up with the legend that is Timmus. What a true gentleman, really nice chap. Had a chinwag and had Maggie installed with DIS, Cruise and Komfortblinker. Thanks does not go far enough, Tom knows his stuff and it was a great day just watching the transformation take place, really grateful for your time buddy and I've not only got the car updated but a bit cleaner and learned some tricks on the way too. Here are some photo's.

I've used Wynn's engine flush on numerous audi engines both petrol & diesel at each oil change , it will help with the sticky hydraulic tappets that you are suffering.

Hope this is of help!

Hi Keith,

Thanks I was looking at that, I've always thought this was a 'snake oil' product and of no benefit, can you confirm it made a difference? personal recommendations go a long way as Amazon etc seems to be 50/50 on waste of time or epic success.

I've used it personally for years with great effect, the tappets are hydraulic & rely on the oil to pump up & stop the rattling you get from them on start up from cold, the flush cleans the build up within the tappets allowing the free movement of the tappets once again,if you get the engine warm with the flush in & then drain the sump in the normal way before fitting new filter & refilling with oil of your choice.

Just warm engine as per instructions & don't drive it with flush in!

These are my observations over many years of Audi ownership all have seen 200,000 miles without trouble & would be my first job on a newly purchased secondhand car , but it is entirely up to you wether or not you choose to do it.

Hope that helps
Keith.

Thanks Keith, that is good enough for me. Shame it has just had the filter and oil changed (high grade stuff, not cheap rubbish) never mind, will get some and apply it correctly and feed back here the outcome.

Don't waste the fresh oil you've put in , let it run & do it next change if it hasn't cleared with the new oil you've just put in

You know I had actually spotted that at the weekend and was tempted! It has to be a very rare thing also, wonder if there any numbers floating around on S4s in Orange?
