LOL - What is it with you and Towbars @mrbroons ?

Errrrrr. ;-)

You can never have too many Jeremy! It is broken however so I'll be doing another video on removal and refitting, this time I'll be getting it done in daylight!!! So watch out for that video, if you get the chance take a look at my older videos and subscribe and you will get notified when I put up a new one.

The audi one fitted to mine was removable and subsequent ones i have seen have been with that same style of neck

I think the problem is that if left in place long-term, they end up sticking in the socket to the point where they can no longer be removed. Maybe they become slightly bent from small impacts against walls etc.

I now have a scan of Shug.

Not content with fixing 1 FSi I now have 2! So lots of things to work on, some of them the same!

As per Project Stob I'm open to any offers of help, I don't profess to be an expert, but I hope to be much more knowledgeable with everyones help and to give back to everyone some interesting films of the fixes I try and how these cars can be kept running.

Thoughts suggestions? Constructive or otherwise ;)

  1. 17439 - Intake Manifold Tuning Valve (N316) - P1031 - 35-00 - Setpoint Not Reached - OH NO NOT AGAIN!
This is the typical FSi flaps issue - it could be the potentiometer or the vacuum actuator
https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/fault-p1031.8692/page-4 - Please use this thread for all updates and I will give any project specific information here - Thanks PlasticMac I hadn't spotted this one on my search.

2. 16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected - P0300 - 35-10 - - Intermittent
3. 16685 - Cylinder 1 - P0301 - 35-10 - Misfire Detected - Intermittent
So this means there are multiple misfires, and specifically P0301 is saying what cylinder is involved - cylinder 1 plus P0300 is saying others randomly. VCDS can be used here to check the misfire count -
  • Check that the battery is holding a good voltage - cars can start but still not operate the sparking system effectively with a low voltage - check for 12.8v whilst stopped. Check for 13.7 - 14.7 whilst running.
  • Check the alternator is operating effectively - same as above
  • Check the spark plugs and coils are in good condition and installed correctly
  • Check for a vacuum leak in the system - check air intake system
  • Check the high pressure fuel pump is working effectively and that the fuel filter is in good order
  • Ensure that the correct fuel is in the system, super unleaded.
  • Check common ground failures - behind light and on B pillar
4. 17441 - Sensor for NOx (G295) - P1033 - 35-00 - Signal too Low
5. 16395 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake) - P0011 - 35-00 - Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)

6. 01271 - Positioning Motor for Temperature Flap (V68) - 41-00 - Blocked or No Voltage
7. 00856 - Radio Antenna - 36-00 - Open Circuit

As an FSI owner, I'm pleased to see people such as yourself and young Louis taking these on wholesale, learning their nuances, sharing knowledge and in effect keeping them on the road when they might otherwise be scrapped. Hats off James and the best of luck with the venture. I look forward to learning and following the journeys as the stories unfold.

Report back on this car. I have a broken actuator rod. Anyone have a working actuator going for a reasonable price?

Sorry no, but about £90 new.

Looks like inlet manifold needs to come off and cleaned as sticking flaps will most likely will be the cause of the broken actuator arm. I think the manifold will be too big for your newly purchased sonic bath, but maybe one half at a time?

Hey that's a great shout. I tried TPS for the part and they want £117 and with my garage's discount it's £114! So looking for a good used one as there could be further issues beyond this that need addressed so keeping costs down until the car has proven itself. EGR 3 from Wynn's is where I will start. I will borescope it first to identify the condition of the flaps and see if I can improve it steadily without removal. Looking at my other project post I was looking for information to map out the EGR (or blank it) as this is a good source of the fouling in the first place and would mean we would suffer from less long term issues. I'm looking for any information on this (good or bad) as whilst I want to fix the current issues I'm also looking for longer term preventative measure also so we can build a list of maintenance tasks for working FSi's also. Thoughts?

Here is my latest video. Unboxing the Dragy GPS performance meter and a little look at the other things I've been up to.

Links to the kit I use and the Dragy are in the video description.
