Today I had to take my car to get a puncture sorted out so I went to my local Kwik Fit who repaired it for free, I noticed that the clip/wheel balancer thingy on the alloy wheel had gone, so I questioned him, he siad that he had put it on the inside of the tyre. So my question is, is this ok to do, or should I have it put back on the outside?

The wheel has to be statically and dynamically balanced - thats what those lead weights are for - Unfortunately they cause corrosion on almost all wheels - so in fact it looks best if fitted to the inside - just make sure there's no damage around where old one was - if there is get it painted asap.

I used to balance wheels on saturdays to make some extra money while I was in school.

Alloy wheels should be balanced with lead on the inside of the rim, we call this "plaklood" it's done with lead with glue stuff on one side. Some alloywheels have special leadrings on the outside where the normal lead can be hammered on. But it's not as esthetic as the lead on the inside.
All steel rims are normally balanced on the outside where the lead is hammered on. Since most steel wheels are covered with plates or people don't care.
The hammered lead is easier and it's firmer attached. The sticky lead can sometimes fall off.

The only reason I ask is that the other 3 wheels have them on the outside and wondered with this one being on the inside if that would be a problem.

No, that's not a problem. As long as the wheels itself are balanced. The wheels are balanced individually, not as a set.
It's optically not so very nice though..a bit amateuristic if I may say so...

It was Kwik fit that did it, so no suprise there when it comes to standards, although as I mentioned it was done for free so I shouldn't complain.

They deserve a 10/10 for service

The way Kwik Fit did it is in my opinion better espacially if you have alluminium alloys it is better to put it on the inside.
Maybe you could ask them to do it on the other 3 tyres as well.

CONGRATULATIONS[:0] You must be the only person in the UK that has got a free 'puncture repair' from Kwik Fit.

My last experience (with my old A4) involved a second (and third) opinion from the 'expert' fitters before the official adjudication - "Sorry mate, its too near the edge, you need a new tyre". It was that sincere I was thinking of nominating them for a BAFTA. When I said put an inner tube in - there was reference to the 1970's and much laughing:(

It shocked me too, maybe their bad reputation has made them see sense and change certain policies:D
