Purring noise

Hi guys I have searched forums but unfortunately can't find the answer.
I am getting a noise from just behind the drivers side dash, or near dash engine bay, more so at low speeds, low gears. I can only describe the sound as a cross between a diesel and a cat purring loudly in your ear. I cannot find where it's coming from. Anyone experienced this before.
Ps I have a 1.4 petrol.
Thank in advance.

There is a metal connection arm behind steering wheel near window that connects dash to body. Sometimes this vibrates loose I have read. Has dash been out at all? Just a guess.

Now not 100% but does this car have a mechanical speedo drive off the gearbox / diff and that is making the noise? I assume it has to be converted to electric signal but not sure if done at the lower end or dash end.

Are there any A2s with mechanical speedo drive? More likely, the speedo uses ABS. The 1.2Tdi uses a G38 Hall sensor on top of the gearbox; the system compares the shaft speed with engine revs to ensure there is no clutch slip but this is not required for other models.

Please can we clarify when this sound starts up.

Is it when you start the engine?

Is it when you put it into gear?

Or is it when you pull away?

When the car idles or drives in lower gears. But the sound is loud but in a really small area either inside drivers side dash or in engine bay near wind screen. Thank you

How about ABS pump or power steering pump. Know both are right down the front of the engine bay, but noise does travel.

Ideally you could get under the car and check up the back of the engine to see if anything is rubbing the bulk head or floor under driver? Would explain low revs when engine is moving a lot, like on tick over.

Did you manage to sort this? I had a similar sound but I have a 1.4 diesel. Sort of purring between 1300-2100 revs sort of range.

Turned out it was the MAF sensor vibrating off the engine mount on the drivers side, I put some foam strips underneath and that cured it. No idea if the petrol has the same setup but could be something to check, one the diesel there is only about 2mm clearance under the sensor so easy to see how it can vibrate and cause a noise.

I found out what it was. There is a ribbed black plastic pipe on the left side engine bay as you stand in front of car. It was hanging pretty loose and was vibrating against part of the engine. So tucked it into another area and vibrations stopped.
