Thanks Andy, very helpful, it also appears the part that goes to brake pad wear sensor has been butchered on mine as it does not have the normal plug terminal at all... it is just shorted together.
Butchery of pad wear wires is very common, just like mine was.
Is there no option than buying whole new harness part? might just put some few wires to the sensor from ABS connector round the outside just to test, does not look like it would be possible to replace the wires inside the rubber tube
Both my FSI's do not have the tube, just loom wrap which is easy to unravel. I have heard of the tube, Paul(
@depronman) mentioned it once and I remember he gently heated the tube to help access to the brake pad wear wires, but maybe only present in TDI's or earlier models. Maybe Paul would elaborate.
I have traced and freed the abs/pad warning loom to the point where it passes through the bulkhead at the top right (viewed from front) of the engine compartment by means of a large grommet. How the hell you get at when emerges from the grommet in the cabin is beyond me at the moment, it looks a lot of work to strip to get at it. Anybody? I think most people give up at this point and butt joint new to old in the engine compartment at this point and weatherproof.
Anyone could provide main ABS connector pin-out? I could probe what other sensors show hopefully would give me some more insight on the problem.
Back to the main point. I agree you have to be convinced of a discontinuity in the abs wire pair pad/abs loom before considering replacement and to this end have to test existing for continuity or make up a temporary abs loom to test if it solves the fault. Either way you need to know precisely where the abs cable from the wheel sensor ends up. Sorry I cannot help with this I have not got that far yet. Maybe you know, I don't, but I suspect it ends up at the multi junction connector boxes at the base of the passenger A pillar or one of the units in the underfloor passenger compartment. Is the ABS controller the unit at front of the compartment? Anybody?, this is way beyond my pay grade.
At a very simple level I can see the ABS wire pair at the wheel end are pure (no stripe) black and brown which matches a wiring diagram I looked at showing the abs pair going directly to the abs controller. I will look later in the week if I can identify them in the passenger footwell.
For a nominal sum of £1.00 plus postage, If it is any help, I can send you my old abs/pad loom with its ABS connector, cut off in the engine compartment so you have a test loom. I will check integrity of the ABS wire pair before posting but the pad wear pair are twisted together and have a discontinuity.
Hope I have said something useful and anyway it bumps your thread.
