Question for those with DIS and a remapped car..

I just had my 1.4 TDI remapped, and besides me feeling a bit underwelmed with the performance, I noticed that the fuel consumption computer in the DIS is now showing way to low numbers. Over the last tank of fuel I averaged 22 km/l, which is close to my normal consumption, but the computer said 29 km/l.?!? It used to be pretty accurate compared to calculated consumption, but after the remap its way off and way to optimistic..

Has anyone else with a remapped car experienced the same, or does your DIS computer stays accurate on consumption.?

Alex.

Hi Alex

Cannot answer your question about DIS as I haven't got it unfortunately, but I can comment on your statement "me feeling a bit underwelmed" with the remap.

I felt the same after my remap (also a 1.4TDi). However, I found that it kicks in at about 2000 rpm when I believe the turbo fires up. The road speed will depend what gear you are in. But I certainly feel my body thrust back into the seat :) but then I tell myself it's not doing the fuel economy any good. But it's reassuring to know the power is there if needed.

Regarding impact on fuel consumption. I had the 5th gear change mod at the same time. Before the changes I was getting 20.2 km/l average over the preceding 2 years. Since the changes it has been more variable, but I would say 19.9 km/l average over the following 2 years (I don't really push the car, just occasionally each journey to keep the turbo loose). Mind you, immediately after the changes I did a 4000m/6400km road trip to Sweden where I achieved 21.8 km/l with 2 people and luggage and a heavier load on the way back.

It's very difficult to compare two vehicles as traffic congestion and types of roads vary between countries and regions as well as driving style. Even for myself, my journey type has changed over the years, and probably the 5th gear is a more of a hindrance now with less longer journeys. Hope this doesn't confuse more than it helps ;)

I had my "75" remapped by Stealth.

My DIS mpg readings were unaffected as was my fuel consumption.

Lots of points here.

Who did the remap? What were your BHP and torque figures before and after? Was it an "off-the-shelf" remap, or a custom one done on a rolling road? Did you start with a 75PS or 90PS motor to begin with?

When I had my remap, the difference was like night and day. Full boost comes up earlier, and doesn't drop off beyond 3000RPM as it does on stock - ie. it's actually useful to take the revs up to 4000 if you want to. The car actually drives and responds, rather than feeling constantly asthmatic.

As to the point about the DIS - no this should not have been affected whatsoever. If your fuel economy has plummeted, could it be that the map is over-fuelling? Do you see any smoke? Or are you simply driving it a lot harder to try and utilise the extra performance?

I just had my 1.4 TDI remapped, ... the fuel consumption computer in the DIS is now showing way to low numbers ...

A decent remap would have resulted in a very different feel to the engine, more power at the low end and more freely revving at the high end.

Some 'remaps' are just fiddling with the MAF (air flow) sensor reading. These will cause the MPG display to go wrong because it uses the air flow as an input, they'll reduce your actual MPG a bit, and you'll see black smoke under heavy acceleration.

However, it may just be that the ECU was reset when it was being remapped. If this is the case, give it a couple of tanks and the figures will return to normal.

Thanks guys.. I better ad some information to clear things up..

My actual fuel consumption has not changed after the remap, its only the DIS computer that's being way to optimistic now, indicating that its now using a lot less fuel then is actually the case. Its doing around 22-23 km/l, which is my normal, but DIS says its doing 28-29 km/l.?

My car is a 75hp and I had the remap done by a guy who is renowned to be a bit of a guru on VAG diesel cars, and besically the best here in DK to do a custom remap on VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat cars. I choose him because I wanted the best possible engine map. He did a base run on his rolling road which came up with 79 hp, 210 NM of torque and a very smooth power curve, which indicated a very healthy running engine.

He said beforehand that he should be able to achieve 25-30% more power compared to base numbers, but at the end of the day he ended up with 97 hp and 241 NM torque. So that's just under 15% increase in torque, but he said he couldn't really squeeze more out of it because the engine software didn't like it, and perhaps also partly due to clogged intake from the EGR.

He did say that the engine software in my A2 was different than what he had seen before, and it was typically Audi to make their own specific software rather then using the one from VW or Skoda. When asked he said that he had remapped A2's before, but only the 1.2 TDI, and also the 1.4 TDI engine, but only in VW and Skoda cars with different software. So he had to spend some time to make a base map for my car. And when fine tuning the map on the rolling road he also said that this software did not like being tampered with, and in the end he had to settle with the above mentioned numbers.

I did however, also ask him if he could increase the throttle response as I found it a bit dull as standard, which he did. And I guess its because of this that my DIS fuel computer has now lost its accuracy, since nobody else with a remap has this problem....?!?

I also had him delete the EGR valve, as well as having the option to swap between 3 different engine maps via VCDS. The optimized map, a complete stock map and finally a stock map with a rev limit of 4500 rpm for when the car goes in for inspection and emission control.

What before and after power numbers do you guys with a remapped car have.? Or asked in another way, what power increase in percentage did you achieve.?

Alex.

100 to 105PS is a fairly normal gain for the 1.4TDi 75 remap, 120 to 125PS for the TDi 90.

People with custom exhausts and no cats should be able to add 10PS to those figures.

Not sure on the torque figures.

I have a guy I use up norf and he's very good. I only drive audi and mainly quattro where possible. I've remapped about 7 cars. All his maps are custom and not ones that come on a dvd.
Going to pull the map of my 1.4 A2 today. Send it to him and have it back shortly. Will report back.

I get black smoke on my tdi 90 remap from stealth
But also wanted ask this: i had to get a front hub done at a dealer quickly last year so went to skoda and let them mot it too
Is it possible that when they had the car if they hooked it up to diagnostics they could've reset the mapping back to standard?

Also basically disappointed with my consumption these days lucky to see north of 60mpg and its all a roads with just a bit of traffic and i drive like a granny

Is it possible to get a skinny remap done where fuel consumption is emphasised over torquey mid range etc?

You would have to replace your original map. Did Stealth make a copy? Your ecu is not like ram on a pc so you can't just reset. If you brick your ecu by mapping yourself you can reset but the tuner would have to do that. Look up pdi tuning. Lee is his name. Very good bloke. Hope that helps

There are lots of possibilities for the black smoke other than the remap. If however it is the issue I'm sure Stealth would look favourably on sorting it out. I also thought they offer to reload a remap for free if accidentally wiped by the Dealer.
It's worth talking to Stealth about your problems plus the possibility of installing a more economy orientated remap.

Cheers Spike

When putting your foot down hard you will get black smoke, even without a remap. If you really push it that is.

With a remap you are just more likely to make use of it and so see it more often.

Off road diesels that have a massive remap can often be seen with wording on the side saying "If you see black smoke, It don't mean its BROKE"

As for losing a remap, you would have to have someone with specialised kit to do that deliberately, it would not happen just on minor services etc.

Thanks evryone
I do change filters every year or so fuel filters x2 years just due at christmas

Factory dealers will randomly re-Flash ECUs when upgrades or amendments come through from the factory but given the age of A2's it's unlikely - apart from VWs current predicament obviously. I bought a brand new Alfa Selespeed many moons ago and was gutted when the gearshift has massively changed after a routine oil change - they said it was an "update" that couldn't be reversed. Sold the car 2 weeks later.
