random noise

My car has developed a rather strange high pitch whistling noise. But to make it hard to detect, it randomly comes and goes. It resonates from somewhere underneath the passenger seats and is amplified through the seat attachment brackets. When I stuck my head under the car I saw some kind of heat exchanger under the floor-pan and wondered if it was that. Has anyone had a similar problem…….any advice appreciated. Cheers.

2004 1.4 TDi (90) SE, Cobalt Blue, Climate control, Cruise control, DIS, Sport seats, Winter pack, Symphony II.
 
Hi Will,

The heat exchanger you mentioned will be the Auxilary heater - it does make a noise sometimes, however cant really remember whether it was a whistle to be honest - sorry not much help

I have a friend with (something) the same problem... His problem was the catalysator.
I hope this is not you problem too...
