Range anxiety.....

So my DIS is showing 50.8mpg, which has gone up recently to this....so thing aren't too bad.
However, I've noticed the range dropping like a stone.
Yesterday, trip A, starting range 220 miles. Journey 55 miles. End range reported 130 miles.
Trip B, after a top up, 320 mile range reported. Journey travelled 40 miles, end range 230 miles.

This is weird, isn't it?

I've found the range function on my TDI consistent until it gets to the 1/4 tank mark and then range drops much faster than expected. Ironically, this is the point when you want the range to be at its most accurate!

any car i have ever owned that had this function is not accurate at all . they are more of a guessometer at the best of times

Range is usually determined by the last 5-20 miles of driving. If you’ve driven carefully you’ll get a high remaining range and a poor range if you’ve been less than economical. You’ve also got to note if you use the heated seats, a/c and high interior temperature you’ll see a drop. Additionally with recent cold weather, I’m sure you’ve been driving slowly which impacts massively.

It’s just an indication (and will continually adjust) and if you do the same sort of driving all the time you’ll know how many miles you can expect to get to a tank.

I wouldn’t be too concerned unless you see a massive drop in normal driving in normal conditions.

Drive it to the (shockingy loud!) low fuel warning and fill up within 20 miles. If it's the '90 in your profile, be sure to vent the tank and add more each time the pump clicks off, until the fuel level stays up the neck of the tank. That'll give you as much range as you're going to get with any driving style or type of running.

How many burps does it usually take? I’m sure I did mine about 8 or 10 times last time I filled up.

I'm going to have a word with my mechanic, see about the liqu moly flush I see mentioned.....109k, just routine filter changes (cambelt etc was supposedly done by supplying dealer ). Diet of Morrisons dirty diesel and a knckered undertray probably not helping.

So rather than invest in mega expensive heated seats or retro to existing i thought I'd try one of those Amazon specials as 15 quid - plugs into the lighter socket with a wee controller in between the socket and the seat pads.

I reckon I got around 10mpg hit from it!! For emergencies only it seems - surprised its not frying stuff

I probably get to 5 or 6, but after the first shut-off I hold the pump nozzle so the tip is just inside the filler neck, and only touching at the top. That way I can see when the foam comes up the top of the filler neck and fill more slowly, rather than rely on the shut-off.

I usually just have an idea of how long it goes between fillups and do MPG from average, it has been in my experience anyway very consistent between fillups, with not a wide gap for highway or city driving end up in ballpark, usually down to about 1/4 tank left as I can't deal with the beeping...

Speaking of beeping can the beep be removed via VCDS?

i have just whacked another 20 quid in the tank as i was down to 1/4 its now at 3/4 and the DIS is saying i have a range of 165 miles .. ?? i would think i wouldve been in to at least 200 plus

I reset all the values when I add fuel. Remember the range left takes information from the fuel sender as well as how the car has been driven over the last 15 ish miles. Are you sure you were reading the DIS correctly? I take it you have full DIS?

Yep full DIS I may need to do a few more miles for it reset then . So reset the trip meter ?

The first half dozen times I fill a new car up with fuel I take it to the same pump and fill the car every time to the top of the filler neck. Reset all the DIS and trip counter. Then as driving do my own calibration of the fuel gauge to the trip counter, i.e every 100 miles record the needle position on the fuel gauge. The long term fuel consumption will continually work out the mpg until reset that is why I reset at refuel. Instantaneous consumption a bit of a joke unless you see how low you can get it to read. The theory is the range should know fuel has been added and instantly correct itself using the last consumption value.
