Rattle from centre dash

I'm hoping someone can advise of an alternative way to remove the storage cubby in the centre console. I have had this out before, when I refurbished the climate control buttons/fascia. However I am unable to remove it to try and cure a rattle that has been present now for several monts and drying me barmy. A friend has also tried the method I used the first time, ie: making a fist to loosen it. So it's not just me being a weed. Is there any other way of removing the damn thing?

Hi, mine was an issue to remove when Tom did my DIS upgrade. It was one of the clips was causing the problem. Try going in from the top. Use the keys to remove the Radio\CD unit which would then allow you to remove the CC unit. The gap may then allow you to see the problem with the cubby unit.

I'll give it a try. The stereo surround makes a noise at certain RPMs anyway, so that needs sorting too.

I simply could not get the cubby hole thing out no matter how I tried. It had never been taken out before so I got some very fine screwdrivers, the little tiny ones and took off the surround around the cubby hole, you can then see the two metal clips that hold it in place and simply pop them to release the cubby hole.
I did this to replace the indicator relay

I've found that there's huge variation in how easily the cubbyhole comes out. Some slide out with barely any resistance, whereas others feel like they're welded into place. It's all down to how splayed the retaining clips are.
The solution, as has been outlined above, is to first remove the stereo, then the climate/heating controls, and then the cubbyhole.

Cheers,

Tom

Cabin noise is something I had hoped we could look at when we were meant to meet up also @timmus but it wasn't to be.

Ever since I had the double din transmission tunnel and under handbrake storage fitted I've had chronic creaking from that area. When I either change gear or the car turns left and I lean into the area.

Not sure how common this is but any tips on what the cause could be would be good!

Hmmm, I've had this piece in and out on loads of A2s, but have never struggled with rattles thereafter. Are we absolutely sure that all bolts were correctly replaced and that no clips got broken in the process?

It was a long time ago Tom tbh but from what I remember it was all intact. To be clear its not a rattle - more like creaking if that makes sense? Its feels like something isn't quite clipped in or something is indeed missing meaning the area is flexing more than it should be.

Its not going to kill me for now (besides I'm not taking the car anywhere) and I'm sure we can pickup on this whenever.

I had a creak from the trim between the glovebox and centre dash, cured it by sliding a small strip of foam in the gap. Another possible is the ashtray.
