Rattling noise when released throttle and high gear.

Hello everyone, just got my Audi A2 1.4TDI 2001 75hp.

I have some strange rattling when releasing the throttle and whilst in high gear. The noise also continues when the throttle is slightly pushed down, with slightly I really mean barely pushing it down.

When the throttle then is pushed down to the floor, the noise stops instantly. My first thought was that something is wrong with the gearbox/clutch. Maybe flywheel?

But then I read about some issues with the driveshafts from production, as I understand there coule maybe be the cause of my rattle.

Anyways I will add a video of the rattling sound here and hope someone knows what it is.

Thanks in advance people!

Mine does the same when the revs are too low. I'm thinking it's caused by the engines balance shaft, will try lubing it to solve the issue...

Hello,

Interesting, I have been chasing this noise for a few years.

Replaced the following bits...

Drive shaft UJs
Gear box oil
Balance chain sliders
Roll bar bushes
Inner and outer track rods
Top mounts and bearings
Power steering fluid
Lower ball joints
Timing belt and all pulleys
Auxiliary belt
Clutch kit

The noise reduced after swapping the balance chain sliders.

Heard the following could also cause vibration noise.

Bonnet catches at the windscreen end
Worn but undetectable wheel bearings
Pipes at under the scuttle
Flat spot in wheel/tyre

I hope you get it sorted.

Useful info thank you but what are balance chain sliders?

Hello,
It's the balance chain tensioner that is located on the timing belt side of the engine.
You have to remove the sump to get to it.

I was in a hurry so I only replaced the yellow sliders and not the tensioner.
The sliders are not sold separately.

Cheers Andy
