Re-fuelling: Fill to first-click, or to the brim?

Does it really matter how much you put in your tank? I tend to fill my tank up to about half way, as it still lasts me ages that way and apparently it is a bit more fuel efficient due to lower weight.

I track mileage using the "Mileage" app on Android. As long as you put in amount of fuel (litres) and odometer (miles) every time you fill up, it calculates your average mpg.

The MPG calculation is only accurate on a single-tank basis if the tank is consistently filled to the top, and it was filled to the same point on the previous tank (whether that's brim/first click/etc).

If you partly fill, the MPG calculation will be accurate only when averaged over a number of tanks.

The fuelly website can handle either of these alternatives, but only gives you an MPG figure once you've eventually done a full tank (as long as you follow the rules on ticking the 'partial fill' checkbox appropriately).

Also, the more miles you do, the more frequently you have to fill up :) So in order to avoid having to fill up too often, I prefer to fill to the top, and run into the reserve.
