Re-mapped TDI 90 on 15 inch wheels?

Is anyone else running 15 inch wheels on a remapped TDI 90? Since fitting the Audi A1 15’s last week I’ve started experiencing what presents itself as clutch slip.
In 4th gear if I put my foot down hard the revs are climbing but not in direct correlation with the speed. Now this would normally indicate a slipping clutch but……I had a brand new LUK clutch and flywheel fitted 500 miles ago.
I’m asking whether anyone else with the same setup experiences a similar situation.
Project pepperami was a TDI 90 running 160bhp on an LUK clutch and whilst I had wheelspin in 1st – 3rd gear, I didn’t have issues with ‘clutch slip’.
I plan to put the heavier 17’s back on in the next day or 2 just to see if the situation goes way. I’m hoping it does, otherwise I’ve got a serious issue with LUK and who pays for labour to sort a faulty part.

Hi Steve - pepperpots and remapped 90 - no slip for me even when pushing.

Tractions another debate though.

Doesnt sound right to me

If it IS a faulty part, which given your description I believe it could be, it usually will be the supplier who will pay for the labour etc.

I had a similar issue with a flywheel on the A5 which over a few weeks ripped a hole in the front of the engine oil cover on my A5. This was bought from GSF. The garage sorted it, and gave me a report of the faulty part, and also (crucially) the faulty part. I paid it initially (albeit the garage gave me extended credit), and after about 6 weeks GSF gave me a "refund". I'll be honest, it was a lot of hassle, but as the bill was something like £1,500 it was worth doing.

A friend of mine who manages a local garage to me told me that he fit three faulty LUK clutches to the same car over a six month period.

Turned out they were a faulty batch and I believe they were all bought from Euro car parts.

Really hope this doesn't turn out to be the case for you but thought I should mention it ?

Thanks for the advice guys. It could well be that the clutch is slipping then. Damn it, that's a pain in the bum and not expected from a quality part.

Steve, I think my 90 has the stock map so not really relevant to your question, but is the clutch slave cylinder fully retracting?
As to traction, the only other place that could slip would be the tyres slipping on the rims but you’d almost certainly wreck the beads and lose air in no time and I’ve never heard of it anyway. Marking the rims and tyres would rule it out.
Have an egg to suck, but clutch slip will cause that characteristic smoke/smell in no time if you stop, get out and sniff it.
(Many thanks for the cat and pipes for my FSI by the way)

I've spoken to the motor factors and they have said that I've got to buy a new DMF/Clutch and pay for the labour costs again and then try to claim against that on the warranty. The warranty claims can take up to 8 weeks to pay out. A nice present before Christmas.

Not satisfied with that I've contact LUK UK and they have confirmed that is the process, but if it is just the clutch that is faulty then they will accept just the clutch coming back for a refund.

Great stuff.

I'll still try fitting the heavier 17s back on first and hope that its just loss of traction.

I haven't noticed the clutch smell, and that's quite a bad stink so would have thought it would be noticeable.

No problem with the parts, glad they got there safe.

Hi Steve,

I wonder what torque value the clutch is designed for and whether your remap might exceed or be close to the design limit (probably not).

Better not tell LUK it is remapped else they may hang their hat on that!

No, I won't mention that, but as I say above, I've had a TDI 90 with 160hp and not had this issue.

I have heard from a friend that works at tire shop that depending on tires and so on they can slip on the rims directly after fitted due to use of "rimlube" when puting on the tire, this is mostly found on cars with powerfull engines combined with entusiastic drivers, they often notice and come back for a rebalance.

Surely this would cause them to dramatically deflate?

As I understood it when "lubed" and pressurised the tire just shifted "lengthwise" on the rim and destroyed the balancing, I am not sure, but I do not think it was several turns.

"In these days of lighter front-wheel-drive sport performance applications, high torque caused by aggressive acceleration and/or braking makes these vehicles susceptible to tire/wheel slip."

Was more in line with what what the friend had experienced ??

I run 15"wheels in the winter on a remapped 90 and never experienced the situation you describe Steve

I have 15” wheels on a remapped 90 with a custom turbo and a 6 speed no issues
