Information Rear axle conversion to discs on a 75.

The work has started fully now, the new axle should be in place tonight and plenty of other jobs to do. Fitting the lowered springs, new grooved discs all round, etc.
The really good news is that the new wheels seem to JUST fit!!!!!!

So the R8 style wheels are off and awaiting collection, as is the old 75 axle (whichis in good condition) which should be collected soon.

These are the old (more like new) wheels, unmarked and with almost new Vredestein tyres (they are brilliant),

Nat has a bargain there at £500 all in with wheel studs and lockers etc.

Can't wait to see the new 19" wheels on, we just tried one of the rears on to see if it was even close to fitting and it was close, but doable.

Since I know that 205/35R18 on 8x18 is pretty tight I am very curious about the results! MOAR! :)

Since I dont want to hijack this thread I will just leave this link here:

(this one is not exactly up to date, but you get the idea)

Hi Nagah
That is very thoughtful, but please feel free to start a project thread or one in "members cars", we would love to see more and hear how it went.

I would really like that

Cheers

Since I know that 205/35R18 on 8x18 is pretty tight I am very curious about the results! MOAR! :)

I had 215 35 18s on my current wheels and because the wheels had the ideal ET of 35 they fitted without rubbing and without spacers.

The 19" wheels are 8.5 (and 35ET again) and the tyres are 215 35s again and so they clear side to side, but the 19" tyres are 1" taller than I wanted (I couldn't get 215 30 19 tyres, so the clearance that is VERY tight is now front to back, especially with the votex skirts reducing the opening slightly, but with the car on the ground they seem to clear everything. I will hold off from stating that they fit until all 4 are on and the car is sitting on the lowered springs, but I am a lot happier than I was when I believed they might fit but was worried that they wouldn't (if you know what I mean?)

I will update this thread when the car is on the ground.

You can keep the handbrake lever and front handbrake line (assuming it is rust free) from the drum brake. Yes, it is a little different from the disc brake one but it will result in an exceptionally good handling.
You will pull the lever three klicks and the car jumps from the brake test stand. This is awesome and I strongly recommend that.

However you will notice that the FSI/90 disc is still too small, therefore I will upgrade the brake to the 256mm disc once my rotors/pads are worn.
I also strongly recommend to NOT use ceramic pads as they have considerable lower brake performance. Yes, they do cause little brake dust, but I prefer better performance.
Hi Nagar,

The contribution is most welcome thank you.

As for the handbrake, I wanted new cables all round and the brand new handrake mechanism from the TDI 90 was only £40 from Audi, so I opted for that (especially as everything else on the axle is new I might as well spend the little amount to get the Handrake mechanism as a standard 90 works (my wife's A2 is a 90 and I am happy with the handbrake operation, but it is good to let people know that they can save money like that.
Yes the discs are tiny and I am sure I will want to go for larger ones at the next change.

Yes the ceramic brake pads might have slightly redused oerformance over "uprated" pads, but I don't drive that fast, I just enjoy the brisk motoring and never really overwork the brakes. The reason for ceramic pads is ONLY because of the lack of brake dust, my new wheels are shiney silver and I like to keep them that way.

As I say, I really appreciate the input and I am REALLY liking what you have done to yours and I am keen to hear and see more of it.

Thanks

The axle is on, the 19" wheels are on and it was lowered onto the ground for the first time!!

The wheels are so tight that some more cutting will be required.

I had to cut the Votex skirt where it wraps around the rear wheel arches. it is not visible and actually looks a little neater like that.

Fingers crossed when it goes for its MOT tomorrow, it shouldn't rub,but you can hardly see any daylight at the front and rear of the rear tyres.

But I am liking the grooved discs and the white axle (ok it is not as bad as it sounds)

It will be worth the hassle when it is finished because I like the way they look. I will post some pictures on Sunday after I get to the show.

As posted on the "Today I ........." thread, a good day for my A2.

The axle is mounted and looking good in white!
The new discs are on all round (with the ceramic pads) and the car sailed through its MOT.

More importantly, the 19" wheels are on and although they rub slightly on full lock and when travelling reasonably quickly over speedbumps, that is a minor issue and easily fixed with a bit of trimming. It does not rub on anything serious or visible externally. (I am very happy about that)

I will post pictures that I will take at the social on Sunday, not trying to be dramatic or "buld the tension" or anything.
It is obvious that a lot of people won't like them anyway, it is just that I want the pictures to show the car at its best.

Looking forward to getting it back tomorrow!

They look brilliant Steve. As you know I also have the Avus wheels on mine and my wheels look very big from a side angle yet they look dwarfed by yours.

Good choice of wheel. When you said about fitting 19's I thought the car may look like a rollerskate but combined with the lowering they really fit well and dont look out of proportion at all.

It's hard to tell from that angle but the offset seems just right as well. Good job :)

Thanks, but it looks like it would not fit with the Votex kit on and I don't want to cut that and if I go under it I would be worried about ground clearance over speed bumps. But it is is very nice and tempting!!!

I am ideally looking for one that exits through the bumper as with Pocoloco's.

But I like the one you have linked to because it has both pipes operational!

I think you'd be best off just going for something custom made rather than buying a pattern one. There are hundreds of decent exhaust places that do custom work and probably for close to the price in the link.

Yes, back in the days when I had my "Custom car garage" I employed a specialist exhaust builder and we had a proper pipe bender. His stuff was a work of art and we had many very happy customers. Thise were the days!!

I wish I knew where he is these days. But I have lost touch.

But I am lucky enough to have a company called TGH Customs (Top Gear) near me in Hayes Middlesex and they are great for customising work including exhausts.

Go here. https://www.infinity-exhausts.co.uk/ I will be if ever any of our exhausts fails.
Thanks,

But I am working long hours and I need somewhere local, these guys are known to me (I used to take my V8 Taxi to their shows and they gave it centre stage!!!) they have done work for me in the past, I wasn't sure if they were still in business, but thankfully they are.

So I will get a quote from them this weekend.

Took the car to them today, they quoted me approximately £250 for the rear exit exhausts (real ones) and a sportier rear box. THey said that theoir customers normally do away with the silencer on diesels.

I pointed out that I am 63 years old !!!

But a slightly less silenced exhaust note might be ok.

They also said it would be around £80 to do the work on the rear arches to get me the full clearance (jus remiving some of the inside of the arches, no visible changes)

So that sounds like a very fair price!!!

By the way, here is a shot of the rear wheel showing the clearance (or not!) and you might just be able to make out the white axle and yellow spring as well as the (grooved ) discs now on.

That seems a very reasonable price Steve and I would imagine it's because they are doing you 'mates rates'. I would have thought almost double that figure.

Yes, they did like my taxi and I used to have one of their stickers on it, also they are decent ordinary "blokes".
